dina sent a fonte joins us now from our sister station in detroit. dina you've been following the michigan state shooting and the emotional toll that it's taking and sadly, that's something that's affecting so many families and communities at this point. what have you learned as you're studying these shootings? well and you know, pam, we wish you could say that this was an isolated incident, but it seems like all over our country every day, there's somebody dealing with some sort of tragedy like this, and i can tell you i have two students at michigan state and i can tell you it feels very personal. these kids think of this college campus as their home as these buildings mean a lot to them being able to hang out with their friends and feel the sense of security. so this is a very hard transition to go back to school and feel safe once again. what i found particularly interesting is talking about coping. how do you cope with this? and how do as parents how do we say you're gonna be okay? um psychiatrist tell me one of the best tools to dealing with trauma and this goes for any kind of trauma that you might be dealing with is to talk about it, and we've heard from that advice many times before. but this is something that i hadn't heard before. it's the brain science behind it. so take a listen to this doctor. the emotional center of her brain is near the back of our brain and the memory center of her brain is there. that's why strong emotions can trigger memories so strongly, but by talking saying our emotions were stimulating our frontal of the thinking the cognitive center of our brain and that helps us process. um, what happened to us ? and so it doesn't have to come out of us. in the strong emotions and strong behaviors that may be unhealthy being able to put it to words being able to talk about it being able to think about it, um, can help us move forward. it's yeah, this is something that they know, of course when dealing with veterans and ptsd. that's why it's so important to talk about it to move those thoughts to the front of your brain where you can process it better and realized, okay, that was then that's not going to happen today. other suggestions from the doctor exercise, of course, we know that that is a proven remedy to help when you're dealing with. anxiety journal. listen to music art and even talked to family members. if you can't if you're not comfortable talking to a professional yet talking to a family member, but pam, there's real science that says, getting those thoughts out of the back of your brain into the front can have a big impact . and dinalking with family, first of all, i'm sorry that you have dealt with this personally with two kids over at michigan state i have to college. students as well. and i know so many of us parents. we feel like we live in a safe area, our kids in a safe place. and to be honest with you, my youngest daughter her. her biggest fear is a school shooting. how what are some things we can? how do we talk to our kids about these tragedies to prepare them and help them deal with us? well one of the big messages that we've been hearing especially recently in light of what happened at michigan state is you talk to kids about? let's control. let's focus on what we can control, so let's focus on controlling our self care. in other words, let's let's try and get some sleep or let's try and get out and go for a walk. let's try and maybe eat healthy. so let's let's try and focus on things that we can control. and um, also put things in perspective a little bit that this this is our somewhat rare event. i me
