dinesh d'souza, the defendant attorney in this case. mr. d'souza, are you prepared to get more opening statements because i am. >> very good. >> so, this is a debate about american foreign policy. not a debate about obama's foreign policy. it's not a debate about the patriot act. it's a debate about the impact of this country and its actions in the world, on the world, and on us. i want to start by talking -- talking about impact of america in the world. a good way to ask the question specifically asked this. what would the world look like if the influence of america were shrunken 20? because that's basically what it means for america to be non-interventionist is for america to have zero impact on the world. that would be for america, think of america as another candidate. canada has her impact on the world. [laughter] things can happen all over the world and the canadians have a point of view but no one really cares. [laughter] and america used to be like that. we had no influence. until basically world war ii. then we started having an im

for "this week," jeff zeleny, abc news, washington. >> and dinesh d'souza joins us live, as well as georgetown university professor michael eric dyson, who is interviewed in the film. welcome to both of you. mr. d'souza, let me start with you. the majority of this film seems to be a defense against those who question anything about this country's history. don't you have to look back, especially at something like slavery, acknowledge what happened before you can move forward? >> absolutely, and actually in the beginning of the film we have numerous critics of america, you included, noam chomsky, a native american activist, and we lay out the case against america very passionately and without me making any defense, but i think that the film then turns around and addresses the critics and makes points that get neglected. >> pretty quickly it moves on. i watched it, as i told you. i watched the entire film. it moves pretty quickly. >> the reason is that the critique is so well known. in fact, it's drummed into young people endlessly in schools and in colleges. what's missing is the answer to it. s

dinesh d'souza and richard dryefuss are back with us. indoctrinated into a version of america that may not be complete and full. do you feel like your film gives us a different version of a more complete picture of america? >> i think what's happened is there's a narrative that's developed in america since the '60s. it's taught not only in colleges but spread out into elementary and secondary schools, defined by america being the bad guy. columbus that was mentioned here. the interesting thing is cls came in 1492. america was started in 1776. so right there, it's very interesting that america gets blamed not only for columbus who, by the way, neverlanded in america, but the crimes of the spanish conquistadors, the french, the british. this is all now saddled on america. why? i call it the shaming of america. what's happening in our schools is there's a political desire to undermine the patriotism of young people, the natural patriotism by telling them the american stories is the story of owe pregnancy. i challenge that narrative and say

i notice that in the polls right now maybe dinesh d'souza is a smart guy but the polls say republicans are losing faith in the country faster. a majority say the country is great but if you look at the numbers over the last few years republicans are buying off on that and i think is again just saying to that audience, oh, yeah this is exactly what we've been telling you and that business oh, you didn't build it, america built it. everybody knows that was a bunch of hooey and said during the campaign. >> the point is, the only people that will go to see a movie like this are people who have already heard these things. i give d'souza credit for making this film. but the challenge is make something for everybody else. you have to infest and infect pop culture and get into the people who haven't heard any of these messages and that's what the left is really good at doing. the left is good at going after people on campuses. >> how does he get it? i agree. this is the only way he can do about. you got fox news or independent film makers to try to aggregate it together in the hopes that it wi
