dingell when he was 29 succeeded his father at a congressional district. his district is part of the big three auto country. he is hoping that the dingell dynasty continues with his wife debbie and auto industry air and former lobbyist being elected in november to succeed him. dingell spent a decade and a half in the commerce committee and was its ranking democrat until henry waxman ousted him in 2008. dingell is known for his quick temper and questions of witnesses the people magazine called intimidating. earned the nickname the truck for his 6 ft. 3 stature and his style with the chairman's gavel. the committee has wide ranging jurisdiction so he has opted laws on clean air, in danger of species and health insurance including shepherding through the affordable care act. in spite of passing the endangered species act and other environmental legislation dingell has a reputation as an ally of the auto industry and its main union that has managed to fight attempts to strengthen our mental regulations for cars. at his father's knee serving as house page in th

john dingell said, i appreciate it coming up, but we're not even going to hold hearings on it. i said what's the problem? he said, look, this is going to be a highly contentious issue in the house and i'm not going to have a bloodbath over this because you're never going to get it through the senate. and he frequently referred to me, which i treasure, young man. [ laughter ] he said, young man, you don't realize you have to get 60 votes for anything in the senate. and you won't be able to get 60 votes in the senate to pass it. people have been trying for over a dozen years and it won't happen. i said to him, well, the president is going to ask what the result of this conversation is. if we get a bill out of the senate will you agree to bring a bill out of your committee on the floor of the house and get a bill passed on the house so we can take it to conference and he said you won get it out of the senate, but if you do, i will agree to that. and sure enough he did. so that raises the question how did we get it through the senate? don dingell, a long-term democratic -- john dingell, a long-term democratic congressman, longest serving ever, was a member of congress who voted on that, and he recently said we had no idea we were voting to eliminate carbon dioxide, so how did it happen? well, the e.p.a. says so, and some of the environmental groups filed a lawsuit and they said that congress passed a law in 1975, and that law said you should reduce pollutants, and you have a responsibility to produce -- reduce pollutants and carbon dioxide is a pollutant. why? well, the ipcc, the international panel on climate change, says that co2 creates global warming. it's perfectly positive small amount of gas in our massive environment that makes plants grow better is increasing, and it is. it is increasing in the environment because of burning carbon fuels. if this increase is going to warm the planet, we will have more storms, more tornadoes, the coasts are going to flood and all of this. therefore, the e.p.a. should regulate it, must regulate it. by a 5-4 ruling, the supreme court agreed. now, congress has never voted for tha

congressman john dingell, one of the principal architects of the clean air act -- he's over in the house -- said just last week -- quote -- "i do not believe the clean air act is intended or is the most effective way to regulate greenhouse gases." that's the first. the second legal reason is that this rule relies on an outside-the-fence approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. section 111 of the green air act should onlial -- of the clean air act should only allow the e.p.a. to establish a process where the states determine the most appropriate emission reductions on a facility by -- on a facility-by-facility basis. instead, the e.p.a. has set statewide reduction mandates without regard to the technical feasibility of actually accomplishing this goal. now, cap-and-trade proposals will emerge under this, which will ultimately pit industry against one another so that the real impact of this rule could far exceed its advertised intent of targeting only power plants. oklahoma attorney general scott prewitt has effectively made this case and will lead the charge challenging the legal au
