dingell spebt a decade and a half as the chairman of the house committee and then dingell is known for his quick temper and questions to witnesses that people magazine called sbim dating. he earned the nickname the truck for his 6'3" stature and for his style wielding the gavel. he's offered laws on clean air endangered species and health experience, including shephe shepherding through the affordable care act. dingell has a reputation as an ally of the autoindustry and its main union that has fought in atempts to strengthen regulations for cars. he's watched congress since he was a child: and his father's knee as serving in the house page in the 19d 40s. he's here today to speak to us about when congress worked. please give a warm welcome to congressman dingell for his seventh appearance since march 7th, 1975. and our most senior member, john dingell of michigan, who has served in the house longer than anybody in american history, also at one point chaired the committee. the committee is currently chaired by fred upton of michigan, and mr. waxman of california is the ranking democratic member. there are many areas where we work together, and i hope that the public recognizes that that is the case. certainly, this legislation, bipartisan in nature in the house, but also in the senate under the leadership of amy an example of how we can and should work together. >> i want to pick up on something you said earlier, which is that congress needs to keep up on technology. is congress keeping up on technology? >> yes, i think congress is keeping up on technology. that does not mean we will not have to continue to keep up with technology, because technology advances so quickly. but i think it is the responsibility of the energy and commerce committee to take the lead in this regard. staff.rely on expert we also allow the testimony of those who appear before us in the technology area. and we want to

>> i had the pleasure of serving with john dingell, the gentleman who served longest of any person in house. kennedy: longer than strom thurmond? >> john was in the house his whole career. he would talk about in the old days, they could talk, it was never personal and the jets and everyone else came. they were more free agents, individualistic and never have time for each other. they would always be going back and forth and as the media increased, it led to the total breakdown between the aisle and the caucus itself. >> some of that crazy libertarian response means great, that means they're not going to cooperate and give me a trillion dollar farm bill, and the moments of comedy and tip o'neill after-hours. kennedy: like deficits. >> can you tell us practical impacts beyond, that creates dysfunction when people are sordid like that? >> means you get bitten on both cheeks.
