i'm dionne lim. the investigation continues into the shooting death of 36 year old oakland police officer tuan lay. lay was in plain clothes at the time. he was shot and killed early friday while responding to a burglary near a cannabis business. it all happened near the city's waterfront by embarcadero and fourth. tonight, community leaders tell abc seven news reporter suzanne phan how devastating this loss is for his family. the asian american community and the city of oakland. on this saturday, the stars and stripes are flown at half staff around the city of oakland in side the police department. a growing tribute for fallen officer tuan lay. lay had been with the department for four years. he leaves behind his wife and his mother, oakland councilwoman carol fife says this loss is particularly hard on so many levels. i've been in conversation with the family and they are heartbroken. >> this is not something that anyone should be dealing with during the holidays. so my love and support goes out to

i'm dionne lim. there are new details tonight out of the middle east about an attack on an american warship. us officials confirm the uss carney shot down two drones today. officials say it was in response to attacks targeting the ship and several commercial vessels. there are no reports of injuries, but the drone attacks mark a major increase in maritime aggression in the israel-hamas war. a rebel group from yemen is taking responsibility, saying the ships were linked to israel and ignored their warnings. that same group has been targeting israel amid its war with hamas. now israel says it's expanding its ground operations to the entire of the gaza strip. they also told civilians to leave neighborhoods in the south where many fled in search of shelter. the past few weeks. all of this a day after israel said negotiations to free hostages taken by hamas reached a dead end. abc's ines de la cuetara has the very latest. >> the israeli military says its expanded ground operations to every part of the gaz

i'm dionne lim. new details tonight. police say the former pittsburgh police officer and marine shot his wife on thursday night and kept officers at bay for hours. this all happened right off monument boulevard in pleasant hill near a busy shopping center for abc abc7 news reporter suzanne fawn tells us the police chief is now under scrutiny for ordering officers to leave the scene before that standoff ended saturday afternoon. police were still on scene at this home on cleopatra drive. hours after 40 year old chungliang chow turned himself in, police say chow fired a shotgun through a locked garage door thursday night, injured his wife as she tried to get into their home. her injuries were not life threatening. on this saturday, the police chief had a lot of tough questions about their handling of the standoff. so the big question on many minds is why did officers leave the armed suspect barricaded alone in his home? and why did officers leave? late thursday night, we didn't completely leave. >> we had surveillance goin
