this play in disney results? julia? what was it? $200 million loss? >> that's right. $200 million. it's a big question this weekend. whether the avengers super heroes will save disney. marvels the avengers is expected to gross in the $150 million range. it grossed over $300 million overseas. you won't see the impact until the next earnings announcement. the fiscal second quarter results which are out tuesday will be dragged down by the $200 million writedown for john carter which the media giant says results in an operating loss between 80 and $120 million in the studio division. in the quarterly announcement, we should see the benefit from positive trends at the parks and advertising and higher affiliate revenue from the networks. disney is expected to report 5% growth and 13% growth in earnings per share over the year ago quarter. i will be interviewing bob iger following disney's earnings and seeing what he said about parks and trends in particular. melissa? >> thank you from los angeles. options traders expec

we've got a tv series on one of our disney branded channels, disney xd.t's a big consumer products franchise globally. and while we would have hoped that retail bought into this a little bit more aggressively going in, we know that they're searching for as much product as they could possibly get their hands on now. and that will last a long time, through christmas, and hopefully well beyond through these other films that we're making. and then of course the sequel, as i mentioned. and then of course the possibility of marvel appearing at our theme parks in a variety of places around the world. it's going to be a few years before you really see that. but there are plans in place to start taking advantage of those great characters. >> already. because i know it took a long time to do the new "cars" that is opening up. >> it takes time because we try to look for the right place. we try to design the right experience and slot it in at the right time. but we're talking now much more aggressively, as you would expect. >> right. >> about where marvel can occupy

how about disney? where the combination of beloved characters, fabulous films and tv properties like espn and the disney channel can be understood -- boy remember these days -- it can be understood just by looking at the annual report. disney gets a gigantic billion dollar blockbuster like the avengers and you can see merchandise, sequels and rides that expand the franchise into a multibillion dollar earning stream. pirates of the caribbean. as the ceo bob iger told us yesterday, the decisions he faces are high quality ones. what to do with his capital. capital allocation. do we pay a bigger dividend? do we have more parks or more rides? do we make more acquisitions? do we keep plowing money back into the fabulous programming that we offer, that of course has tremendous pin action. these are the kinds of challenges we can get our heads around. they are the kinds of challenges that make us want to buy and not sell the stock if it gets hit. they give us confidence. europe will be an overhang for a compan
