but we begin tonight with disney. a tale as old as time helped the entertainment powerhouse report a rise in earnings. the success of its latest adaptation of "beauty and the beast," along with strength in its theme park business, helped disney earn more money in shares than expected. the dow component reported earnings of $1.50 a share, better than expectations. revenue was a tad light at $13 billion. but up nearly 3% from a year ago. that along with disappointing operating income at its cable network business which includes espn, sent shares initially lower late in the day. julia boorstin spoke with disney's ceo about the quarter. >> reporter: the one key takeaway for disney, for all the concerned investors, disney says it has it under control. bob iger says disney is planning for the digital future, to eventually have new digital revenue compensate for declines in the traditional tv business. >> what we're seeing is some significant growth of espn subs and other disney channel subs, meaning disney-owned channels, o

i mean, we'll be talking about disney. >> disney has already taken a bite out of this. >> bob iger iught he'd get the break of a lifetime when comey was fired, right? like, wow, that's it. they'll talk about comey all morning. like, hey, comey, hear about espn? >> well, he has lot of time on his hands to watch espn. although he may be one of the people who is not watching "sportscenter" as much either. >> point blank. >> but in terms of the importance of pushing back this time line of what we're grappling with when we get a plan from the white house and/or they get to work with the house and the senate, as they say they already are. i interviewed secretary mnuchin last week. he said we're already at it. that was part of the plan. i mean, it's very hard to know how much the tumult in washington around the russian investigation, the firing of the fbi director, will affect that time line. >> right. right. but they tend not to be able -- they almost are like not dual or triple tracked. take some vacation. the urgency there. you have some republicans who are joining in and being critical.

let's look at disney as a whole.ompany's residence -- revenue growth has been negative in back-to-back quarters, the first time that has happened since 2000 and. you can see total revenue in white, and media revenue in orange. networks are critical because disney gets more than 40% of its revenue from that unit, which includes espn. you can see how the sports giant has lost subscribers for three straight years. lower revenue is stressed, but so, too, are higher costs. espn is the highest-price part of your typical cable tv bundle and it is vulnerable to cord cutting because the network generates much of its revenue from since christians. people, as we know -- subscriptions. people have been pretty quick to cut the cord. 600 30,000 traditional service subscribers in the first quarter. disney might be able to fight off some losses by being part of new streaming services like hulu live. is booming.siness "beauty and the beast" is the worldwide box office leader, and disney's expected to lead at the box office this summe

dan, how are you treating disney? >> the stock got nailed with all those media stocks, bounced a bit, i think the low earlier in the week was 1109, trading above 115 a week ago. look out for a play back to those all-time highs, 122 in august 2015. but the stock may take awhile to get there. one of the things that you look at this earnings event next week, the implied move is 3% on average the last four hours, it's moved about 4%. i'd look to do a call calendar. if you're will and ish if you're looking to play for new highs the back half of the year, i want to target squloo the last jedi," the december expiration. today the stock was trading at $112. you could buy the june 115, december 115 call calendar, selling one of the june 115 calls at $1.45, buying one of the december 115 calls for $4.45, that cost you 3 bucks. the ideal scenario is over the next few weeks into june expiration you'd have this stock move back toward 115. the june 115 call would expire worthless, then you end up owning that december for 3 bucks, m
