the dnc is in debt.ng up the biggest ground game and most sophisticated ground game in the history of american politics. >> bill: talked to a friend of mine republican strategist who has run many campaigns i said so in the end you know the obama ground campaign was really far superior to the romney ground campaign, wasn't it? he said what romney ground campaign? he said it did not exist. >> that's right. look, that's one of the smartest decisions the president ever made. was not letting that organization -- after he won in 2008. you know they brought great decision they brought ofa its assets, the volunteers, the twitter followers into the dnc. we used it to pass healthcare reform. we used it for other important agenda items for the president. we used it for the midterms. didn't work out so well. we had a wave coming against us. but then it was limber and ready to go for the election. and you know what? i think it will be -- >> bill: are you going to keep it alive for 2014? >> we're going to keep it aliv

how much a part of the dnc does it become? how do you do in 2014 what obama for america was incapable of doing in 2010? >> well, let's talk about 2014. those decisions are being made now whether obama for america gets housed at the dnc -- >> could it be a separate organization? >> or it could be a separate organization. i think that coming out of the 2008 election organizing for america, which was really -- >> but you housed it in the dnc. >> right. those decisions are being made now. but i will say that 2012 is a little bit different than 2008. the american people nope the preside president. they know they've elected him once. they elected him again because they want to get a series of things done. the president ran on an agenda so there's a lot we need to get accomplished. ofa, obama for america, those millions who helped get the president elected, they want to get that agenda done. so i think you'll see a pretty mobilized group of people across this country who have a real stake in the outcome of what happens in washington.

do you think the dnc has let down the president or not keep pace with the rnc when it comes with the overall ability to support democrats across the country? >> on the contrary. we have coordinated with the obama campaign. we have a combined victory fund that we were able to have in place far in advance of when the republicans could. their primary went on for so long. we front loaded our grass-roots ground game early on. we sent money out to the states from the dnc, built up our ground game while the republican primary was going on. this ground game you're seeing is really paying off. it has been a different and not so much that we have been out raised, it is how we spend our resources. we did door-to-door campaigning which we know is affected. we had it pay off as the ballots were cast. we're very excited. we are where we need to be. we think our ground game is paying off. >> let me follow up on what date was asking you. next week what do you think your list are going to want to write about what difference in money made in this election? i am thinking be on the presidential election

msnbc political analyst karen finney is a former communications director for the dnc and krystal ballnd co-host of "the cycle." they're calling this the year of the woman, but it didn't come a minute too soon, did it? because according to one study, the united states is tied with turkmenistan of 78th in the world in terms of its percentage of women legislators. so despite what's happened this week, there's a heck of a lot of work to do, isn't there? >> absolutely. 20 women now in the senate. that's record-breaking. previous record was 17 women, but the fact that 20 women is the record is in and of itself pretty astonishing. the one thing i would note to you though is in general, and this is statistically-borne out, when democrats do well across the country, more women get into office. when we had the 2010 republican wave, it was the first time that the number of women in the house of representatives actually went backwards. so now that we have, you know, a democratic really landslide across the country, particularly in the senate, that's why we're seeing historic increases in the numb

can you move that to the dnc? if not, they can be right back where they were in 2010. >> let's stick with this for now. >> one thing on this election night, you had a lower turnout of blacks, latinos, women, people with disabilities. i left your last week and i thought he would have 236 electoral votes. i was low on that. there was a keen sense of peril going into this election. and what the consequences would be if the republicans won the white house. not anti-romney, necessarily, but given what they were standing for, this was not a matter of changeup office. you that people who had the perception they would be a real threat to people. that is the reason why i saw the turnout of people, young and black widows i had never seen -- >> in dc. >> in d.c. >> in florida, where we think there was a voter suppression effort, the african-american vote went from 11% to 15%. >> mark? >> two point. not to tap dance on mitt romney's campaign, but what was the bold idea of the romney campaign that would survive his candidacy?

he's also on the executive board of the dnc.have you with us tonight. >> thank you. >> crazy things continue to happen down in florida. look, this patrick murphy has won the election. what is the governor up to? >> well, you're right. actually, it seems patrick murphy has won it twice, literally. i find this very surprising because the governor was the king of voter suppression. not only in florida, but across the country. he led the way towards suppressing the vote. he's up for a tough reelection. in two years. and i'm a little bit surprised because what allen west is asking the governor to do is not solve a legal problem, he is asking him to solve a political problem. if republicans really are being truthful and have learned any lessons from the past election, it should be that the american public and certainly florida voters want a level playing field, and the governor has no business in this fight. >> does he have any legal recourse where he could cause problems here? tomorrow at noon, florida is ready to certify the votes f

i under that the dnc filed a lawsuit in philadelphia and then with grew it.t's going on. >> we're encouraged by their decision to print additional paper ballots and remember them to 200 polling places in phil fillphiladelphia. we were prepared to take action there. we withdrew the action. we didn't have to do it. our goal is to make sure that every who shows up and wants to vote is able to do so. it looks like that is going to happen. >> a lot of problems in philadelphia because of the chaos, confusion people told you must have an i.d. or you're turned away from the polls when in fact, they didn't have to have that. have you heard other areas. >> we have volunteers on the ground in many of these states where the laws may have changed or they were in the process of being changed and courts stepped in to make sure that voters know their rights, and know what they need in order to vote so that they're not challenged or intimidated at the polls or they're running out of ballots or not able to vote for some reason. we know about it, and we can take action where ne

i think you were the last man standing at the dnc.e rolled out of town and we were talking with chris and you were optimistic then and then after the first debate when there were some within your party who had thrown their hands up and make me want to holler as the song says. what was the key to success last snigt. i would say the obama campaign ran a really smart, targeted campaign. that they were able to bring out in terms of the microtargeting, the numbers that you saw in terms of turnout of african-americans, women, young voters, hispanics, that was a really sophisticated operation. i have to say, i give them enormous amount of credit. i didn't think it was that possible to do what they did. the other part is, you know, in terms of the republican party being, you know, too old, too white, i would add another thing. they're too wrong. they're wrong on the key issues in terms of where the country is. think about this one fact. american people asked in the exit polls where they stood on tax increases for those making more than $250,0
