as you vie for the dnc vice chair and we know the dnc has to deal with where it goes from here. i was in chicago for christmas evening the night of christmas. with reverend jesse jackson and a lot of people in chicago telling me they want to see his son congressman jonathan jackson run for chair. where do you see the future going and the direction going of the party as you run for vice chair? >> i think you need a combination. whether it is the dnc and yes i'm running for dnc vice chair of civic engagement and voter participation. because i think while we have great candidates, i have an unmatched record. chairing the congressional black caucus elected bus, being in the state house. as the first democratic female to deliver the majority. marching with you and other civil rights leaders, putting together civic participation and engagement. in all areas, especially voting rights but when you look at what we just did, whether it was aoc or jerry connelly, we picked the best. aoc did a great job. i think if she moves forward, we have a great plan. we have elected a lot of younger pe

make sure that the dnc chair never sets a foot in d.c. for example. all of your time in the states. spend all of your time with state leaders and organizers and volunteers on the ground engaging with people. don't come to d.c. when it comes to differentiating with the republican party we mentioned how trump is stacking his cabinet with millionaires. reject all billionaires and ultra wealthy individual honey. start there. talk through these big things that recent her power with the people. i think another thing that would be very impactful in terms of emphasizing the transformational change is not just a doing course toward him on 2024, but making sure that you are filling the vacuum in terms of what people need. trump is focused on greenland talk about all of the things that are impacting individuals on the ground level. of all of that, alesia, what donald trump and republicans have shown is that any election the democrats win will be contested in the courts at the state, federal and supreme court level. so make sure that you are developing a deep ben

>> well, jonathan, this is the thing about this role as chair of the dnc.pectation and the expectation here and the reality is here. people think that you're some magician, that you have this magic want that when you speak, the democratic ecosystem falls in line. that is not the case. you are one slice of the pie. but what we have been able to do over these four years is building on what tom perez did the four years prior is to rebuild the infrastructure of the democratic party. we put $264 million into all 50 states and territories, and i believe part of those mixed results we got in this election was, yes, donald trump won every battle ground state, but we won every senate race, and all of the battleground states with the exception of one. and in states like north carolina, we won governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, the superintendent of public instruction, ecretary of state and the supreme court but we lost the presidential race. if the party was totally broken, we would have been totally wiped out. we would not have had all those gains. so

you have ken martin seemingly consolidating a lot of support from dnc members.o have said they're still taking their time getting to know all these candidates. and i think it is notable as you noted earlier in the segment, that someone like ben wickler has been able to get the backing a third way, a centrist, center left group, and the progressive change campaign committee, in addition to the executive director of moveon.org. it shows that's a pretty broad tent, a pretty wide spectrum that wickler is consolidating support from. >> you've got reporting that shares that some in the party including the democrat party out in nevada is calling on leaders to elevate diverse working class background states, trying to change a little how they approach this. tell us, give us their reasoning as to why the focus on those things. >> you know, it's interesting, when you look at this field of dnc chairs and, you know, i will say that statement -- the memo i should say that was put out by the democratic party of nevada was not directly about the dnc chairs. they're taking abou

these are three big questions that face the next dnc chair.on't think marianne williamson is going to have the answers that most of the party members want, but i'm curious to see how they treat her candidacy. >> i think that means a no. i interviewed her too. she's pretty thin skinned. when you challenge her, stories of staff being unhappy with her leadership, you don't get very far. she's pretty prickly about it. i don't think that's what the dnc chair needs to be right now. so let's look at another story. this caught my eye over the last couple of days. not full of holiday cheer. as the year comes to a close, gallup's latest monthly survey finds that only 19% of americans believe that the country is heading in the right direction. when broken down by party, the survey shows democrat satisfaction with the direction of the country fell 17 points between october and december, from 47% to 30%. that might have the election to do with that one. on the republican side though, gop satisfaction rose to 16% from october to november, following the elec

i don't have the years long relationships at the dnc like some of my competitors, but i view that as a positive. i'll be able to tell the folks who should have been told no a long time ago that we're going to be doing things differently moving forward. >> and what would that look like? i hear you on bringing in fresh voices, telling people no, but practically, what's your prescription yeah. >> so one big example that i'm campaigning heavily on is i believe that every single vendor contract, for example, at the dnc, should be allowed to expire from the office supplies up to the seven eight figure deals with consultants. and the reason for that is a lot of these deals are not based on value or not based on what's being provided to the democratic party, but are friends of a friend of a congressman or folks who are otherwise just well connected to the national party. that's got to stop, and we've got to send a lot more of those resources to the folks in the trenches. the state committees, the county committees, our allies in organized labor. these are the party faithful who are actually

what do you make of her running now for the chair of the dnc? >> i'm both surprised and not chocked. what the voters would be looking at. i think the thing about marianne williamson, does she ever think she is going to win? i think she more likes to be a part of the conversation and trying to move danes to talk about things in a different way. when she talked reparations. she was on stage with the most diverse cast of characters democrats had ever put forward in 2020. she articulated why reparations were an important part of her platform and should be a part of what democrats wanted in the best way. so she likes to be around to have those conversations. but she also represents exactly what the democratic party seems to be wanting to move away from. folks that are, you know, care too much not just the economy. she will probably disagree with that. but it is one of those things that you know, maybe i eat my words, it's 2024, who knows what could happen. it is unlikely to go anywhere, but it changes some of the conversation at different points. >>

i want the dnc to be a partner to build that fighting energy to do things that will make a difference for working people. >> your state of wisconsin was one of the swing states in the election that showed a split down the ballot. trump won there after losing the state to joe biden in 2020. however, voters broke that trend as incumbent democratic senator tammy baldwin won her race to keep her senate seat. how do you interpret that result in your home state? what can democrats learn from wisconsin in general? >> wisconsin has been a state that if you look nationally has voted more republican than the national average in 2016, in 2020. wisconsin is a whiter, more rural working class state. often that nationally has meant states moving republican. this time we actually voted more for harris than the national average. we had the smallest swing towards trump of any battleground state. the reason for that is that we turned out more voters for harris who voted for baldwin than we had for biden in 2020. there were more voters who turned out and supported donald trump in this election, so he wo
