let's talk about chris dodd. we all know chris dodd well. we've seen him over the years. chairman of the banking committee, key member on health care, carrying the ball for teddy kennedy on health care, as his surrogate on the health committee, and senior member of foreign relations, former candidate for president, briefly, whose endorsement of barack obama was considered somewhat helpful. but now, completely challenged politically at home in connecticut. and today, the word that he is suffering from what has now been diagnosed as early-stage prostate cancer. will have surgery, we're told, in august. what does this mean for him, politically, because we're told by all the medical experts that there isn't a profound medical implication. this is something that can be dealt with and it often is dealt with very, very successfully. but politically, does this further endanger his political chances? >> well, there are many ironies in this, andrea, because chris dodd has been at the forefront of the health care negotiations, unknown to all of us, until today. he has his own health

i know chairman dodd has mentioned them briefly. at the hearing back in may we discussed new credit card rules and i was troubled by the 18 month delay. senator dodd and i asked you to put the new rules into effect immediately. we talked about how consumers were suffering from an increase in predatory credit card practices, arbitrary rate increases, you said you would look into it. so, first part of my question is have you looked into it? it looks to me as if nothing has changed. things are getting worse. credit card issuers right now are changing fixed rates to floating rates so that they can say when the law takes effect if the rates go up well we're not raising the rates. that's outrageous. that's against the intent of the law. they are increasing fees for balance transfers, cutting credit card limit, hiking up interest rates. so i would like to ask you how did these new advance notification rules help consumers hit hard by this kind of behavior. isn't it true that consumes slammed with fee or rate hikes have no recourse other th

senator chris dodd held a press conference today to announce that he has prostate cancer. he plans to have surgery to remove the tumor during the recess. he says he's feeling fine and the outlook is good. he will continue his work as acting chairman of the senate health committee and still plans to run for re-election in 2010. dodd said he didn't want to use his illness to make a political point but he says, really, this drives home the now-critical thought that having good health care and a health care plan is what it's all about. >> today, 100 people in the state of connecticut will lose their health care coverage. 14,000 people across the country will, today, in the united states, lose health care coverage. for a person who loses health care coverage, that physical may not be something you can afford. and if you can afford the physical, you may not have the resources, the coverage, to help you deal with this problem. it's not about me, it's about people without health care or the ones who are underinsured. people out there struggle every day. that's what really is at ri

chris dodd, hair -- harry reid, boxer, pelosi, record low numbers. how do you interpret these trends? >> clearly there has been a major trend in the last month, two months but certainly the last month away from obama. every single poll has them dropping, has the democratic party dropping, has health care reform dropping and the interesting thing about this is we always liked obama more than we liked his programs. now he's using his popularity to run -- sell his programs and the problem is that's lowering his popularity and the lower his popularity gets the less likely health care is to pass. so when he pushes health care he's hurtt -- hurting health care because he's bringing down the ratings he needs to get it passed. sean: if -- in that sense is that why this gates issue is important? people gave him the benefit of the doubt. they said guys like hannity are wrong, he's not reverend wright. now maybe they're seeing another side of him does that chip away alt his personal popularity? >> it does a great deal and makes him suspect on all his positions.
