dom chu, you have more on this? >> now it is now being shot down officially by the folks over at bloomberg news, the reason why we're talking about this is if you look at an intraday chart of stock shares, we saw an 8% to 9% rise on the heels of what at the time was at first glance viewed to be a bloomberg news report that twitter had fielded or was talking to bankers about possibly fielding some kind of a buy-out offer. it was refuted by bloomberg as a fake story. from a fake website so think of it like what happened with avon and the other fake regulatory filings, alleging that somebody was possibly interested in the stock. twitter shares were up by about as much as 8% to 9%. they've given become a lot of those gains. bloomberg is denying the report that they came from a phony website with a domain that did not even match bloomberg.com or bloomberg news's website as well. so that's the latest right here, you can still see shares up by 3.5%. maybe there are some holding out hope that there's a deal down the line fo

dom chus got the details. dom. >> just to give you an update, we're watching closely fwautsz down 10% on over half a million shares of trading volume. this after the company reports its earnings and sales. the earnings come in at 57 cents a share. that narrowly misses analysts' estimates. revenues come in slightly better. $541 million. analysts were looking for $540 million. but here's the thing. on the conference call they gave weak sales guidance for the current quarter, q3 and that's what's really taking down this stock in the afterhours session. remember, these are shares up about 17% just so far year to date. up about 24% over the past 12 months. so a little bit of optimism perhaps built into these shares. but it's down big. this is the company that has a lot of these cdns or content delivery network services. basically in jargon in layman speak, it makes companies deliver internet content faster. it's a cloud computing company. back over to you. >> dom chu, thanks so much. steve grasso. >> it makes inter

dom chu's got the details. dom. >> how appropriate, melissa.s, let's talk about spirit because the shares are down by about 6% in after hours trade that's very light. only about 7300 shares have traded so far. but you can see the chart after hours there. what's happening is spirit has filed with regulators an s.e.c. form where they lower their guidance both for the second quarter and for the full year. in the second quarter due to the heavy number of cancellations and weather-related events that happened during this second quarter of 2015. they've also used that and in addition to that pricing pressures from the other carriers in the industry. and they've used that as a reason why they're going to lower their full year guidance as well. spirit air shares you can see down by about 6% after they lowered current quarter and full year guidance because of things like bad weather and pricing pressures from the rest of the business. back over to you, melissa. >> thank you, dom chu. at one point spirit airlines had been a darling in the sector. i think

. >> thank you, dom. one man who's really been watching it brian sutland. is our resident fear meche. what does a vix plunge tell you about stocks? >> it's really interesting because like dom said we did have a 39% plunge in the vix on the close on thursday and what's interesting, some analysts saying hey, that means the market's going to rally over the next few days. it actually means it can rally over the next three and six months. we start looking at some of these numbers here today. and what we found was something really interesting ever since we've been in this bull market. there's been a handful of days here, the last three times in fact where the vix plunged over 30% in a five-day period. that's a very fast drop in vix and volatility. it's fear coming out of the market. look at what we found here. huge moves in the next three months. then it sort of fizzles out and you get a little bit of growth or whatever in the s&p and the next six months. maybe a little of back end filling. but the next three months certainly a big bullish time frame here for the

dom chu back at headquarters with an update as the stock, dom, continues to come down. >> it does comeason why is there are some indications route now, we're still trying to sort things out. there's a big indication that the twitter news that was cited prior, as coming from bloomberg news, is actually a fake report. and that's the report why you're seeing the air come out of the stock. it was up by 6% to 8% at one point. now up 3% still. but the story that was referenced for the bloomberg story may not have come from an actual bloomberg domain. that was part of the actual bloomberg news organization. that's the reason why. we're still trying to sort this out. but it appears as though the story that said allegedly that twitter had been talking to bankers because of a possible deal that was proposed to them was actually coming from a fake account. so we're going to continue to kind of monitor the situation. bring you more details. dig of course a little on our own, on our side here. john, kayla, carl. but it seems as though the twitter report may not be a true report. we'll bring you mor

a little more on that dom chu. >>> here on the u.s.ing off this week. so let's take a look at what the expectations are. we know that earnings growth has slowed down over the course of the past few quarters. right now analysts are expecting earnings declines for s&p companies to the tune of about 3%. again, 3% earnings is the expectation before we start this earnings season off later on this week. alcoa and pepsico this week. if you take a look at where the earnings growth and where the earnings drivers are going to be it's going to be a few different areas. let's start here with the decliners. the biggest drags, no surprise here, again continues to be the energy stocks. that sector is expected to post about a 63% earnings decline over the same time last year. again, no surprise here. we saw it last quarter alone. all of these oil prices and then falling from where they were last year really having an impact there. consumer staples stocks also showing about a 3% decline in terms of earnings overall. so that's where the drags are going

i want to defend dom's piece here a little bit because i don't think it is necessarily the volume ofn you look at a caterpillar, a dow component and supposedly one of the leading mining and commitment companies as sort of a leading indicator on its own, and that's down that much is that a worrying sign for that one name? >> there is is a different point you are making is what's happening to the most economically sensitive stocks. if you look at areas like industrials, most people think that when the banks are doing well, the industrials are doing well, they drag the market along with it. what you're seeing is the industrials are having a harder time and yet it is many of the less cyclical companies that are actually doing better. areas like health care or software that are less dependent on the economy. that's been the way -- we've seen the last couple of years and i think it is what we're going to see going forward. >> i saw something and thought this must be a typo this was some sort sf editorial error and i said no it's true. you wrote that you believed that slower secular economi

cnbc's dom chu used kensho to see how the stock moves after earnings. >> you talk about oil and gas and metals and mining, caterpillar plays into that lot of that discussion. their equipment is used in a lot of those industries. if you look over the past year, this is a stock that's lost almost a third of its value. that's a deep-down trend. this right side near the 52-week lows, we're working on our sixth straight day worth of losses. so expectations may be a little bit low going into these earnings numbers. let's look at this according to our data partners at kensho, when it comes to earnings for caterpillar, it's interesting. since 2010, 22 earnings instances has beaten earnings estimates 15 of 22 times, not as impressive as others, but still better than half. on average, you get flat performance in the next day. so the stock hasn't done much of anything on the heels of earnings over the course of the last five years. however, it's been positive just a little 0 over half the time. 59%. this is the interesting part, if you want to play maybe a shorter-term trend. one month later after

dom chu breaks down the most with the exposure to asia. >> this idea china's tentacles are everywherethe second biggest and has an overarching influence with the economies all over the asia-pacific region. you look here at a company like boeing, $23 billion worth of sales. the same with g. echl. apple gets about $31 billion worth of sales from the general asia region. that begs the question, how important are these billions of dollars to the overall scheme of sales here? if you look at a company like western digital, solid state drives, stores for computers, 55%. very levered to what's happening with the asia-pacific region. also micron, flash memory, that sort of thing. the $30 million plus represents about 57% so well over half of the overall sales and then qualcomm gets around 84% from its sales from the asia region. a lot of companies don't break out specifically, scott, china in particular. a lot of companies don't break it down by the specific country but go by region and china is dominated by the economy that is china. some of the stocks if things do get progressively worse or
