well, dom chu is here with answers. >> good morning.lking about this idea that stock buybacks are getting all kinds of traction again. we know they've been a big part of the market narrative for some time now. remember with microsoft's $40 billion, the target $5 billion acquisition. lockheed martin added $2 billion. a lot of these companies buy their own shares. that helps. the fewer shares outstanding, the more to bump up the profits. take a look at this. according to s&p dow jones indices, apple spends far and away on buybacks. they spent $37 billion buying back their own shares last quarter. in percentage terms they didn't buy back that much of its own value. general electric buys about $16 billion worth of its own stock in the 12 months ended in june. and microsoft, about $16 billion as well. as for the companies, guys, that get the most benefit from share repurchases, check out this information. because quanta services, they reduced their share count by 27%. h & r block lowered its share count by 20%. and american airlines by 20% a

chu. hi, dom. >> well, melissa, speaking of hunts, do you remember a time, a time when the s&p 500 and everyhad a dividend yield that was less than the ten-year treasury? it wasn't all that long ago but seems like a lifetime. around the tail end of 2007 and beginning of the 2008 before the depths of the financial crisis and fast forward today and the story is a whole lot different with. a ten-year note yield around that 1.58 to 1.6 range area, eight of the ten current s&p 500 sectors pays more in terms of dividend yield. tech yields the least at around 1.35%. meanwhile, the consumer discretionary sector is just about a hair below. we'll say maybe in line with current ten-year yields, but the other eight, they are all above. telecom and utilities have the biggest dividend yield spread over ten-year treasuries themselves. now, this kind of situation has led to all kinds of speculation about a surge in demand for income-producing stocks. as investors really kind of rush to find yield, but so far we haven't really seen a flood of money come into the market to invest. valuations are arguably rich

this is why dominic chu is here. dom>> this is why i'm here because our friends at cnbc pro did a search to find out what happens a day after the price of nintendo spikes up like it is today, those u.s. shares currently trading -- they were up about 30% of one point and then apple remembers saying mario game was going to come to the ios platform. now, over the last decade nintendo spiked up by 10% or more six different times. in a single day. on average a month later the stock was 2.7% lower than it was before that. and it was only a positive trade, about a month out a third of the time. so for a lot of traders looking at this opportunity, it may be one where they're saying take some profits here, otherwise keep an eye on nintendo because those shares they're having that pokemon go effect right now, melissa. >> what a spike. dom, thank you. more to the markets and technology than just apple. there are plenty of other stocks out there. which ones could make good investments? we'll get free advice next on "power lunch." ev

dominik chu has been keeping a close eye on the action with the speakers in the room just behind us. dom, jim chanos is up there now. >> he is making at least a bearish case, if you will, for shares of tesla. now, this is nothing new. jim chanos has made comments in the past about how bearish he is on tesla's stock. however, he is reiterating some of those comments right now. he has not told us about a specific trade he would make just yet. however, we do have some comments with regard to what he is saying about tesla and solar city as well. he has basically said that he has made disparaging remarks about corporate governance in the past. "i was being too kind with regard to the proxy with regard to the tesla-solar city merger." he says they have cash burn of about $1 billion a quarter and will constantly need access to capital markets. he also goes on to say this is a high wire act in more ways than one. people aren't paying attention to actual financial statements and the risk to it -- it raises to tes will's shareholders. we're going to keep a close eye on tesla and solar city's stock
