i am dom inic chu in for brian sullivan this morning.s how your money stock futures look at this 5:00 a.m. eastern time hour. futures relatively stable open the dow higher by 16 points. s&p roughly flat, 1 or 2 points high, nasdaq by 8. stability in a day after modest losses in yesterday's session. again, for that session yesterday, the russell 2000 small cap index snapped a four-day winning streak, the s&p did snap a three-day winning streak but less than 0.1 of 1% remains from an all-time record high let's look at the stocks you need to keep a close watch on right now. take a look at that earlier trade, earlier in the show, candice bangund spoke about it the s&p 500 up by almost 30% here, meanwhile, consumer staples, many of those stay-at-home type stocks, cleaning supplies or basic food products up 3% on a year-to-year basis. again, the pandemic trade wearing off a little bit we'll see if that trend continues. also, let's see these names, specifically referring to home depot, starbucks and others. why are they important they're all co

we begin with today's market and dom chew whwho has the numbers. >> and a flower. you gave me a plant the last time i'm going stay as socially distant as i can there hand that off to you tyler mentioned before that whole idea that things are going higher they are generally speaking today, a more mute d market session. the s&p 500 did hit a record high we'll put a star next to its name things that going higher it used to be either or. the recovery stocks are doing very well today. some positive commentary and plans coming out of norweigan cruise line, hilton and bp on the oil and gas side of things they are generally speaking. look at the defense stay at home type names peleton. wooem talk about that later in the show c chewy is up about 2.5% as well a few weeks are concerned when there's this much positivity across all parts of the market, it does raise questions about how sustainable that could come. back over to you >> thank you very much can this trend of everything continuing continue. jason, is this market where it's safe to throw money at everything or not? >

it has been a quiet week, dom.ack into growth and away from value i think it is more mean reverting. the first quarter was all value and banks and industrials and energy xlk is up 7% year-to-date. financials are up 18%. industrials up 13% year-to-date. tech can make a comeback there are other sectors which are very attractive. you are looking at jpmorgan chase and goldman and morgan and bank of america next week. the bank stocks will do well in net interest margins and valuations are attractive. although they made a big move. i like the banks in year i th i think they made a nice move. now you have interesting dividend yields. >> that is loosening the reins to return capital. stephanie, many have diversified operations are there areas of the lenders that out perform what has your attention within that bank atmosphere >> i think you just hit it both with the yield curve getting steeper, you want to own a bank of america which has the most exposure to a yield curve steepening trading and capital markets are on fire.

dom, what is the most important business story we need to know today?ntioned earnings season. one of the big themes will be the extension of some of the news items we heard over the past year. when it comes to companies like microsoft and alphabet, we can learn just a little bit about some of the things like whether people and businesses are continuing to focus on work-from-home products. microsoft makes a lot of those tools like video conferencing, shared confidence. alphabet can tell us about the digital market and advertising trends and streaming, youtube, of course. and they own various cloud computing businesses. and outside big technology, we're focused on commentary from supply companies with ongoing supply chain issues. many folks know it's hard to find certain goods out there. there could be longer wait times for others. that's leading to higher prices on everything from food to diapers to cars. stephanie, corporate outlooks on cost increases certainly a story worth paying attention to as the earning seasons rolls on. >> dom, former president t

let's go right to our friend at cnbc, dom chu. what are we expecting at this point?k the only way is up. >> yeah, and it could be the only way is up. we've seen it so much so over the last decade. but a lot of the movement we've seen as of late is powered by an economic objective, and we've seen it on this show. and corporations continue to see improvements in their business prospects since the pandemic economic lockdowns last year. yes, that's a very easy comparison to work from because things were so bad last year. but over the last month or so, it's been some of the large technology, media companies that have been behind the higher moves in the stock market. we're talking names like apple, microsoft, amazon, google parent company alphabet. they resumed that leadership in the markets overall but we will keep an eye to see if this trend can continue, especially because you have a slew of earnings reports, 65 companies in the s&p 500, 10 of which are dow components, by the way, are reporting this week. it's hard to believe, stephanie, but the s&p has nearly doubled s

cnbc's dom chu is back with us. dom, president biden campaigned on this. why is the market spooked?you pointed out, we had some of the worse performance of the stock market this week so far, with the s&p following about 1% and nasdaq, which is more geared towards technology and communication services-type companies, down over 1 1/2%. those have been some of the biggest gainers in the market so far. the reason why this tax increase is, yes, scaring some investors because if you do pay more in taxes, it takes some of the allure away. but here's the interesting thing about it, we're talking about a market that has performed ridiculously well in the last decade. if it comes down to taxes being doubled in capital gains for a certain segment of the income population, the markets react and take it fairly well in strayed. if it was a 1% to 1 1/2% loss for the market overall, it could signal something, stephanie, perhaps we're waiting to see if there are further developments and this might again, because in politics in washington, it's always just a negotiation, right? maybe this is the open
