don, what's the answer, can it? >> the middle class can be saved but we need to take a wide array of aggressive action to save it, i think. it's interesting the middle class itself has in many ways been downgraded in this recession. the housing bubble amassed a host of problems. the middle class has been slowly hallowing for years, wages in the middle class were stagnant throughout the odds. but the middle class retained a sense of optimism and forward progress because of increase in housing wealth and the increasing debt that went with it. but the recession has blown away that fig leaf. and one reason i think that this period has seemed so painful to so many people is in some ways we've seen the concentration of a decades disappointment in just the past three years. >> yeah. when you look at the -- look both of you. former chief economist at the imf, professor of boost school of business. you've been writing about wage stagnation. basically this big dedi vid for a while. this is pretty shocking. median incomes have

don? >> so, listen, i understand her team is taking extraordinary lengths to protect her from sharks. and man of war jelly fish. >> that's right, don. i couldn't hear the question very well, but she went into detail about how she's going to protect herself from the sharks. as you mentioned there will not be a shark cage. but what she's got is she's got some six kayakers who are going to be kayaking alongside her. they've got these electronic mechanisms to put in the water to fend off the sharks. they send out electricity that keeps the sharks away, at least three feet. there's one species the white tip that they don't work against so they're going to have to have some shark divers alongside, as well, who will jump in the water if any of these white tip sharks do get near her. the idea is they can do something to sort of fend of those sharks. i've actually got one of the kayakers right in front of me right now showing off this shark shield. it's pretty interesting technology, don. >> all ri

i'm don lemon. we're going to start in iran where two american men could spend the next eight years in prison. josh fattal and shane bauer were detained two years while hiking near the iranian border and charged with spying. here's the very latest from islamabad pakistan. >> this is a verdict that will probably surprise a lot of people outside of iran who expected josh and shane to be released after they have spent more than two years in prison waiting for this lengthy case to be completed. and it's a report that will deeply disappoint the parents of josh and shane who were deeply hoping this or deal would be over for their sons. it appears that this or deal is finally over. a court in iran has convicted bauer and fattal of spying and trespass and sentenced them to eight years in prison, three years for trespassing and three years for spying, a charge that the men and their lawyers have been declaring all along. his attorney says he was ain't ware of the verdict until he heard it in the media. he sa

rated much higher than brazil and india, don.n you put it in perspective, our debt is valued higher than the debt of those countries. an interesting note here, china is the biggest holder of our debt, and almost half of the debt in this country, don, now is, held by foreign entities. that's why it makes it such a global story. it's certainly not just about the united states. >> there's a lot of consternation how they came up with this. a lot of folks in washington are saying they miscalculated. what factors did they use to come to their decision to downgrade the country's credit rating? >> there was this squabble last night between treasury and standard & poor's about $2 trillion, a significant amount of money. standard & poor's said even if our projections are off, we still think the debt to gdp ratio in this country is unsustainable for the long-term and there ever do not think this country deserves a aaa credit rating. they look at, number one and arguably the most important was political. the political climate. we all know th
