i read don junior's full 232 pages. so, i'm speaking primarily from don junior's testimony there.it strikes me as is the story that don junior wants out there is essentially that rob goldstone was a guy he kind of sort of knew but he thought was a little bit of a flim-flam artist. but they were sort of acquaintances. so when rob goldstone reaches out and says, hey, can we set this up, he's willing to take the meeting because he is interested in the dirt. he may not be aware of the legal, ethical questions there. but he also doesn't know if goldstone has anything. so, he's trying to essentially say, there were a lot of things up in the air. i was willing to do the due diligence to meet with him if anything serious came up, then i'd sort of deal with the repercussions of it. nothing serious ever came up. the issue there, and jim touched on this, is there is a fair amount of inconsistency in the story that don junior told to the senate intelligence -- judiciary committee versus the public one. his public story changed a few times. what he told the senate judiciary committee under oat

what don junior was really doing in this testimony. it's sort of like somebody hitting balls in minor league baseball and gets the call up to major league and has to start hitting off the major league baseball pitchers. even the minority democrats in front of the senate were ham strung by their lack of access to information. for instance, phone records, who did that blocked call relate back to? when don junior has to start answering questions from investigators in the mueller investigation, perhaps in a court situation, they'll be fully loaded with knowledge, perhaps of his conversations, of e-mails he sent that may not have come forward, and maintaining this posture of i don't remember becomes a lot more difficult when you're talking about these highly critical functions inside of a campaign, inside of a young presidency. it really defies belief that his father's obsession with the russia investigation didn't spill over into their personal conversations. and so this studied pose that he effects in front of the senate sub committee is

look, what i think what don junior was doing, is he was trying very hard to walk a fine line. he wanted to make absolutely sure that he did not lie in his testimony and he wanted to make sure that he maintained plausible deniablity for the president. in doing that, what we see now is he's shifting responsibility and saying maybe it's possible through hope hicks, but it does come down from the national security perspective and it comes down to whether or not the president was directly involved in the conduct of this meeting or in how the narrative around this meeting was shaped after the fact. >> and seth, play this out for me because one of the things that sean is getting to a little bit and one of the things you see in don junior's testimony is i don't recall and i don't know, on the question that did your father tell you he saw e-mails about the meeting? i don't recall. did anyone else pass along information about the meeting? i don't know. was your father involved in drafting the initial statement about the meeting? i don't know. i never spoke to my father about it. when so
