don mcgahn, and told him, let's do this, and don mcgahn put a stop to it. that's the recording. unless you have something other than "the new york times" -- >> no, no, i'm just hoping that the system worked enough that he was blocked or shut down -- the question will become not only his intent, was there actually any action taken which became an abuse of power? >> i'm only pushing you -- i'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt in life, but the facts of what they are unless you have something different from the times. >> no, i'm hoping mcgahn not only gave advice but stopped him short of an action which would have set this in motion and become an abusive power. it will be a question of, did he talk about it? did he attempt to do it? or was there actually an affirmative act that set this in motion? if there was, you are right, it is an abuse of power. what i think it really raises, i hope for those around donald trump, is, we have a president, right or wrong, who is the most inexperienced in the culture of the office, the laws of the country, the operations of the constitution. having a chief of staff and a counsel in whom he has sufficient confidence and enough strength to stop these extra-constitutional impulses of his is so important. and tonight as we sit here tonight, he does not have a counsel. he does not have enough confidence in his -- >> right. >> -- in his chief of staff. >> senator torricelli, sounds very classic, washington democrat, which is bending over backwards to find some bright spot in a very dark story. as for donald trump's inexperience, he has been very clear about what he wants to do. i want to play him in a debate with your old boss and get your analysis. take a look. >> it's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of donald trump is not in charge of the law in our country. >> because you'd be in jail. >> how do you view the reports here that donald trump took that long-standing pledge, lock her up, you'd be in jail, i'll investigate her, and tried to make it real? >> i mean, i think this is a scandal of 15 on a 1 to 10 level. i think the idea that the president is naive or he is inexperienced is ridiculous. he was essentially trying to use the apparatus of the state to punish his political enemies. hillary clinton and james comey. and if this happened in another country, we'd have the state department saying, it's no longer a democracy. just because he was stopped by his counsel informing him it was an impeachable offense does not take away from the fact that the president essentially wanted to break the law. and i for one think it is something that doesn't warrant an investigation, i mean, the republicans should be investigating this tomorrow before the democrats come in. because they're a blank check for this guy, they won't. but it is one of the most -- i think it is amongst the most outrageous things that have come out of this white house in two years of outrages. the things people thought were a fantasy that could occur are actually things donald trump wanted to do, to not just hillary clinton, a person who won the democratic nominee and was his competitor, but james comey, who was a central part of the mueller investigation. i don't think there's any way to look at this that isn't -- that shouldn't scare every single american. >> ari, this is absolutely off the charts. donald trump is basically running his office like he's the head of a banana republic. trying to put his former opponent in jail, trying to put james comey in jail. and what is really concerning is this isn't just an isolated event that occurred last spring. this is something that's going on right now with his appointment of this hack whitaker as the acting attorney general. why did he put whitaker in there? why didn't he go through the senate confirmation? because he's looking for somebody that will do his bidding to get rid of the mueller investigation and to undertake the kinds of illegal investigations that he wants done. that's why whitaker was put in there. that's why sessions was fired. it's all about him trying to undermine the rule of law, which is the basis of this country, which was the foundation of this country. he wants to go back to the time of the english kings where anything goes. and that's where we're headed. >> i would just say that donald trump exhausted the benefit of the doubt about 18 months ago. sorry. >> mira, we talked about your boss, hillary clinton, and they had a pitched battle in the campaign. james comey spent most of his time rising through government in republican administrations. he is one of the individuals who appeared to stand up to donald trump in those early months. to nick's point, when people were trying to figure out, do you go the whitaker route or do you go the comey route? and we know what happened. here was donald trump making what lawyers call an admission against interest, admitting that he was angry with and fired comey because comey did his job in the investigation, apparently tonight we learn that's why he then tried to get the former fbi director jailed. which, again, is not something that we like to think about as happening inside the united states. it's happening. take a look. >> i was going to fire comey. knowing there was no good time to do it. and in fact, when i decided to just do it, i said to myself, i said, you know, this russia thing with trump and russia is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the democrats for having lost an election that they should have won. >> mira? >> i mean, i don't understand why this isn't just another example of obstruction of justice. using the department of justice to essentially retaliate and punish a central witness to your possible crime? i mean, remember, comey is the person who trump was basically talking to to discourage his investigation. i don't know why -- i mean, obviously this is part of a pattern of obstruction of justice. and i agree with your earlier assessment that this is likely to have been something that special prosecutor mueller knows and special counsel mueller knows. but i think for the american public, this is another element in a crime committed by -- possibly committed by the president of the united states, which we should obviously be deeply worried about. >> right. senator, i'm going to give you a final word. let me show you one more item again in the context of don mcgahn, which is, donald trump, by "the new york times" reporting, did try to remove bob mueller. it's don mcgahn who basically stopped that when it was attempted in december, and mueller knows all that. analyze that as well in the c context what was we're learning as a final thought. >> i don't know that there's obstruction of justice. clearly we're on the line of abuse of power. this is something we don't do in the united states. we don't use the mechanisms of government and the justice department to punish political enemies. it is not something we do in our political culture, it's not something we do in our laws. but it does raise, again, right now there's one thing to have donald trump, if he has -- if he is surrounded by people who contain his instincts. with whitaker as attorney gener general, mcgahn gone, kelly potentially going out the door as chief of staff, there's a big difference between donald trump surrounded by capable people who respect the constitution, and donald tru
don mcgahn, and told him, let's do this, and don mcgahn put a stop to it. that's the recording. unless you have something other than "the new york times" -- >> no, no, i'm just hoping that the system worked enough that he was blocked or shut down -- the question will become not only his intent, was there actually any action taken which became an abuse of power? >> i'm only pushing you -- i'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt in life, but the facts of what they...

don and then miles and then rachel. don, first to you. what do you think of this scene? >> i am completely jazzed by this. and the first thing i would like to say as a scientist, i would like to congratulate the technical and scientific staff at nasa and jpl. great job. >> and what's just happened? we know it landed on mars. tell me more. >> well, now the next step is to shake out the equipment, deploy the solar panels. then there are three different missions that "insight wi" will. one is to test the wobble of mars' rotation, to find out something about the core of mars. another one will be to deploy a very sensitive seismograph to look for mars quakes and when meteors hit mars, to find out more about its interior. and finally, and perhaps the most exciting, is to drill down 16 feet underground to actually take the temperature of the planet. and that will teach us something about the interdynamics of mars. and it will also tell us how warm it is down there. and not from a science point of view, but from an explorer point of view, if it's warm down there, that makes it more likely that there will be liquid water. all in all, this is going to be a fascinating scientific project. >> so these scientists are salivatesing over the data to come. but miles, to you, underscore for me, the fact that this has been flying since may up towards mars and the likelihood of this precise landing. there have been so many failed probes in the past, why is this such a big deal? >> brooke, this is awfully darned hard, you know? we've already made the point that less than half of these landings succeed at all. 500 or so will certainly get you into the hall of fame for baseball, but this is tricky stuff. and you know, it paualways impresses me as you listen to them, they're so calm and cool and collected, you know their sweating bullets underneath, but they never reveal it and when it happens, they just erupt. i would love every young person in america to absorb this, take this in and realize that studying science and math and engineering isn't as nerdy as you may think. it could lead you into that room and it could have you giving high fives for putting something on mars. that's incredible. >> yeah. >> hey, nothing nerdy about it. i've been to space camp three times. rachel, we were excited in 2012 with the curiosity rover and it's a rover, meaning it will move. this, obviously, stays put to collect the data. it's a lander. what's -- what more are they trying to achieve with the data? >> well, first what's interesting is where they've landed. and they call it like a relatively borie ining parking on mars. and it's really close to the equator, just north of the equator. it's very flat, not very rocky. they chose that for a reason to minimize any potential damage, not steep. and it will perform all of its duties right there from that one spot. and also close to the equator so it will get a lot of sunlight. it's powered by the solar panels that will soon hopefully deploy. there's a lot of dust that happens when this lander -- when the thrusters go off, so they're waiting for the dust to also settle before they deploy those solar panels. but being close to the equator will guarantee that they got a lot of sunlight. but it's interesting that, you know, they're not choosing some like really active spot on mars. this is, as they call it, a good parking spot. so, yeah, you know, but every place on mars, let's be honest, is pretty interesting. it's mars! but also, the fact that they just pulled this off. you have to remember, this was a nearly $1 billion mission ten years in the making. so a ton of money on the line. you know, those watch parties, those viewing parties all over the world happening right now. so there was a lot of pressure on nasa to pull this off. and the fact that they did it so beautifully, but the odds against them really just speaks to the power of those scientists and engineers. absolutely incredible. >> it's amazing. it's amazing. rachel, thank you for your excitement. and miles and donu all so very much. and again, a huge, huge, huge congratulations to nasa. >> thank you. >>> we continue watching cnn. i'm brooke baldwin. entirely switching gears now. new developments in the russia investigation. jerome corsi, an associate of president trump, ally roger stone, says he will reject a plea deal with special counsel robert mueller's office. he tells cnn, quote, they can put me in prison the rest of my life. i am not going to sign a lie. mueller has recordedly shown interest in corsi's ties to wikileaks founder, julian assange, and corsi said he was offered a plea deal on one count of
