don knapp with more on the next plan of action. don. >> we can say tonight is much less chance than it was last night here. but that group behind me right now is planning their next police action, the action with police, sit the general strike planned, they are hoping to plan off yesterday. >> demonstrators enjoyed a mostly mellow day before they enjoyed a session before wednesday. last night a protest march about the city brought them several times face to face with police. [ people chanting ] >> reporter: tensions mounted as the demonstrators moves about the downtown area, again and again coming up against police lines. the marchers were protesting the police action tuesday that forced them from their city hallen camp. . aggressive pelosi vicks of occupy oakland protestors left activists and iraqui war veteran scott olsen with a brain injury and left mayor jean quan apologizing then flip- flopping by welcoming campers back to city hall. >> it appears to me there have been mistakes involved in this probably on both sides. >> report

don knapp on how it will help undocumented students get a quality education. >> these three students have all worked hard to get here and struggled to pay their way. gladus had to drop out for a year. >> i couldn't afford the $7,000 they expect. >> hopes the california dream act, which will allow undocumented grants to help her get back into school. the money set aside is about 1% of the total $1.4 billion in grants. >> what a lot of people don't realize is paying for our education out of our own pocket. every time that we pay for our tuition, inserting the amount of funds to a return to aid fund. >> redistributed to all the students at the state universities except undocumented residents. fellow student, a south koreaen who came to the u.s. hopes the legislation will help him with law school. more importantly. >> really give us motivation to continue to fight and continue to mobilize within our group to push for better dream act. >> chair of the california republican party says the california dream act expands benefits to illegal immigrants. >> so, i think it's the wrong priorities.

don knapp is in pacifica with what people think that will mean for delivery of emergency services. don? >> reporter: in pacifica on a clear day, residents here on going to be asked the question, does it matter where the dispatcher sits when you call for 911? the city says no, it shouldn't matter at all, as long as connections are good. but some people here aren't so sure. it's always bad news when a town lose's police officers to budget cuts, but pacifica has made another choice, cutting loose police dispatchers, while trying to keep the same number of officers on the street. now when a resident calls 911, a dispatcher in south san francisco answers the call. >> the call will go to south san francisco? >> yes. >> sounds like an unfortunate budget cut to me. >> reporter: by contracting services to south san francisco, pacifica expects to save $350,000 a year, about half the $630,000 it needs to cut from the city budget. >> we have the technology. as long as there's no significant difficulty in response from those calls, then i don't see any problem with that. >> do not like it. it's

don knapp with new information on what happened. >> in this newly acquired video, or group of motorcyclists can be seen moving along the shoulder of the freeway of hundreds of cars backed up behind the crash scene. it's believed that the motorcyclist was struck and killed. investigators say the crash was possibly an intentional ramming after freeway altercation. the band had run up on the motorcycle to ban believed to be an member of the hells angels and then drag the bike and demand for mile or more. then there was her question if the writer was dragged as well. >> his motor cycle was dragged. in terms of him being dragged, that's not necessarily the information i have at this point. we know he was hit by car but not necessarily being dragged. >> the latest edition of the san francisco chronicle online, they say that transit driver swerved suddenly, clipping one and causing others to swerve. the victim is identified only as george of california nomads. police shut down miles of the freeway and conducted what they said was the homicide investigation. the driver of the paratransit ban was ar

don knapp is in oakland where this is going on the. don? >> reporter: that's right. the march to protest alleged police brutality became a chase and race and a contest of wills between demonstrators and police. they'd turn and go somewhere else and the police would race to get ahead of them. here's how it went earlier tonight. they're back here now. [ people chanting ] after dark, the occupy oakland city hall rally had swollen with people who had come to march? a protest of alleged police brutality. primarily the actions earlier this week that chased protestors from tent city they had maintained for about two weeks. but police largely out of sight until the march formed a blue line blocking access to headquarters and the alameda county court building and they were again met and stopped by more police officers. [ people chanting ] everyone no doubt had in mind the city's move tuesday to remove the protestors from city hall. a tent city sprung up again on the city front lawn and spirits are boosted by the newfound status of the national center of attention for the occu

don knapp with what happened and the aftermath. don?reporter: this stretch of highway through san leandro is several miles long crime scene as this investigation continues and the freeway remains shut. the freeway has been closed since about 4 p.m. when the crash of an east bay paratransit van and motorcycle, a crash investigators say followed an apparent altercation described as road rage. the chp [ no audio ] >> it looks like there is a primary area of impact that we can see on the freeway now that we are got all the cars moved. looks like a primary point. then the motorcycle got placed underneath the van and dragged for approximately one mile before it stopped. >> we were among those caught in the traffic jam immediately after the crash. we were about a quarter mile behind the incident. probably just a few seconds behind it. our cameraman recalls seeing a motorcyclist drive by with a hells angel jacket on our left side. we did not see a van. we do not know if that motorcyclist was the one involved in the crash. the transit van driver

in san leandro, don knapp, cbs5. >>> checking some other bay area headlines. a four-alarm fire. it started after 1 a.m. in a 20-unit complex at the corner of south king road and bowling green drive. six people were rescued including some that had to come down fire ladders or off balconies. two residents and a firefighter suffered minor injuries. the cause of the fire is unknown. >>> the woman accused of killing nursing student michele lei is scheduled to open a plea tomorrow. the 27-year-old was arrested last month but her pregnancy has delayed her court appearances. michele's body was found september 17th four months after disappearing from kiaser permanente in hayward. the motive for the killing is still unclear. >>> and the east palo alto teacher who hit and killed a 6- year-old girl is blaming the sun for the tragedy. she told police she was blinded by the flare while driving on bay road a month ago. the child was struck in the crosswalk. the d.a. is still deciding whether to file charges. >>> well, no end in sight for the occupy movement. >> i wish the mayor would do someth

don knapp on what investigators are calling a homicide. don. >> reporter: just by coincidence, we were in that traffic jam. at the time we had information from the chp that it did involve a van and a motorcyclist and the motorcyclist was lying face down on the freeway and probably dead. we later learned that police say it was an apparent road rage incident. now the chp is saying that the van driver and by the way, there were no people in the van. just the van driver. the van driver and the motorcyclist riding with others were involved in some kind of road rage altercation. st patrol says the van driver may have intentionally ran the motorcyclist. overrunning the bike and dragging it several miles of the eastbound lanes of this usually heavily traveled freeway, east of 150th have been closed since the 4:00 p.m. crash. what police are calling a homicide investigation. >> it looks like there's a primary area of impact that we can see on the freeway now that we have all the cars moved. it looks like a primary point and then the motorcycle got p
