don knapp is following this developing story for us. don? >> reporter: you're right, ann. they are on the move. we're at the plaza where this began about 1:30 today, when they marched out of here. right now, they are leaving again, with the announced intention of going back to the oakland kaiser convention center, the empty building over at 12th and jackson. they tried to get in there today. there was a standoff. they came back here. let's look at the video of the events that occurred later today when they tried to get back here, when there was taunting between demonstrators and police. police went after this one demonstrator here, took him down rather largely. he may have been injured. we understand there were a number of injuries to police officers as well. there were some flairs and rocks and bottles thrown at police. also, police fired back with tear gas or at least gas, and smoke. that appeared to be all resolved at some point today. it was letting up a little bit. we talked with sergeant jeff thomson of the oakland police department. >> it turned out to be a peaceful

in marin city, don knapp, cbs 5. >>> with our eye on this storm today was day number 34. since the last time we had rain on december 15. and boy, when it rains, it pours. we take you to the city of san francisco and this was the evening commute. here's the very latest. our high deaf doppler radar place the showers plowing through, but still picking up plenty of precipitation north of the golden gate bridge. anywhere stretching around near the beach. meanwhile, east of the bay, we have a pretty moderate cell right here containing heavy downpours heading in the direction of antioch. you should be hearing those within the next 15 minutes. dry in san jose and moderate rain falling in san francisco around chinatown. into the golden gate bridge. let's confirm that with our weather camera. oh yeah, look at the puddling going on right here on the sidewalk. current air temperature in the 40s to 50 degrees. otherwise the rain will be continuing throughout the overnight hours and it appears as if so far, we have seen 3/4 of an inch of rain in santa rosa. and also in san jose. this i

don knapp shows us, they are fighting with pg and e just to keep the lights on. >> since early november, marin city street lights have been leaving residents in the dark. three street lights flicker out and come back on only to go on again. here directly in front of the community center, two lights are out, as is another light down the street. >> we did a survey of our own and 15 lights flickering, dim, or completely out. so we made a place to pg and e to have those lights repaired. >> that was nearly three months ago. the lights still have not been repaired. it's not only a safety issue. >> also, it contributes to just overall environment of the community when lights are supposed to be on, they should be on. >> marin city is one of the less well to do communities. found wide disperties in the county. health, education, and income appear to be tied to race, gender, and the communities where people live. are working street lights an indication of that? >> i don't know if there's a connection there. what i do know is that place matters and your environment, your public infrastructure cont

don knapp with the extraordinary security scare. >> reporter: this pilot and passenger blissfully flying along unaware of the firepower that waits for him. he looks out the window and sees two f-5 fighter jets. a small private airplane like many of that's seen here at north field departed santa monica, then lost radio contact. in the post-9/11 world, that's considered suspicious. >> we needed to determine the -- if this aircraft was a threat or not. >> reporter: norad, the north american air defense command scrap balanced f-15 fighters like these. if they can't determine intent, the ultimate option is to destroy the airplane. >> that intent could be something as simple as a pilot turning off the radio or having the wrong frequency. >> reporter: the fighters likely flew alongside the cessna 172, made visual contact and were able to reestablish radio contact. the plane landed here at the kaiser terminal. the pilot was met by tsa agents as well as other airport staff. this sort of thing may be rare in the bay area, but it happens almost weekly across the nation. the last time over washingto

in oakland, don knapp, cbs5. >>> they are cleaning up after the three-alarm fire tonight, which just started after 7:00. firefighters said that the architecture of the house made it difficult without the flames. luckily much of the house was spared though because the fire was mostly contained to the attic. no one hurt. a cause has not been determined. >>> two san francisco firefighters were hurt while responding to the house fire as you can see it this morning. and flames, they were shooting out of the building near 42nd avenue just after midnight. and the injured firefighters, they both suffered burns on their arms. and they are expected to be okay. no one hurt. but the house is badly damaged. the cause of the fire has not been released. >>> a police officer shot and killed a man last night during the traffic stop in santa clara. the officer pulled over the drivers, suspected of being under the influence. witnesses say that the driver, they were told repeatedly to put his hands above his head, but the man refused to cooperate and reached for a gun. that's when police say that the of

don knapp is in oakland with what police are saying. don? >> and this mixed residential and business area on east 14th. right at the san leandro open border is not a bad neighborhood but it is certainly not the neighborhood you would expect to find a 6- year-old child wandering about at 3:30 in the morning. that's what passerby did find and fortunately for the child called police. >> a citizen who was in the area, noticed a little boy by himself. did a fantastic job. stopped. and stayed with the little boy. after calling the oakland police department. when officers arrived, they took the little boy into their care. the little boy currently is at a safe place. >> reporter: the boy is seen here in the back of a police car. as oakland police officers arranged for child protective services to get involved. cps now has the boy. and what the officer says is a safe place. and cps has taken charge of the investigation. >> any time we have a child involved, child protective services takes the primary lead with the investigation. and through that, it

don knapp, cbs 5. >> other bay area headlines now. richmond police are looking for the gunmen who shot and killed a college student. the shooter was chasing a car on foot when he stopped and opened fire at a brother and sister sitting in a parked car. 22-year-old edwin martinez died at the scene. his sister wasn't hurt. police say that there is no indication that the gunman opened fire because he thought the siblings were witnesses. so far, no arrests nor suspects. >>> san francisco jack in the box will remain open late. the burger joint's 24 hour operating permit was removed after complaints of early morning disturbances. the eatery put out a request. they approved half of the permit. it will be shut down between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. a second security guard was also added. >>> huge explosions from the sun hurdling toward the earth. the wave of radiation, part of the biggest solar storm in nearly a decade. while it brings with it tech troubles, it's not all bad. elizabeth cook says it's putting on a good show. >> this is what the s

don knapp, with more on the demonstrations. >> reporter: by evening occupy protesters left city hall for another protest. an attempt to take over the kaiser center. instead they marched to new inner city telegraph. police moved in behind and boxed them in at the back of a large, fenced-in vacant lot. as tensions mound the group pushed through the fence around police and headed for the street. moving at-will through the city with police behind them, they made their way to 24th and broadway, forced the doors and ran inside the ymca. police rounded up 30 inside and 40 outside and made arrests. >> we got total a rough estimate, about 100 people being detained and possibly going to be arrested. >> reporter: meanwhile, back at city hall, other demonstrators entered the front door, made their way into the building and trashed things. the american flag burned at the door. officers arrived and held the open door. this evening administration said it is enough. >> occupy oakland has got to stop using oakland as its playground. >> it is not a lawful protest by any means. these people gathered wi
