don knapp is in napa. >> reporter: napa residents have been warned about the flooding. especially those living close to streams and the river. now they're bracing for the night. others are still working at it. crews were working into the night to remove about 3 dozen cottages mounted on mobile home frames from the river point resort. the rising river cut short vacations for guests staying in about 30 of the timeshare cottages that are threatened with a possibility of flooding. so far the napa river remains within its banks. it's expected to flood tomorrow around noon. folks aren't taking any chances. city trucks have delivered 50 tons of sand to this lot at first street and freeway drive. folks were filling bags as quickly as the sand came in. nearly 2000 bags were loaded up. >> situation is that i live on a creek. we had a big rain thursday night and the water came up to almost the top of the remaintaining wall. so we decided sandbags were a good idea. >> reporter: are you afraid the water might come over the wall? >> absolutely. >> reporter: the possibilities of flood

a live report from sandy hook in a moment but first, cbs 5 reporter don knapp is at a vigil in san francisco's dolores park. don. >> reporter: ann, even though we are a continent away from what happened in newtown, connecticut, people in san francisco in the bay area very much touched and troubled by what happened here. there was a vigil tonight one of about 16 or 17 around the bay area suggested by moveon.org. people decided to come down and bring their own candles. they stood in the rain and talked about what happened and offered each other support and talked about the title of their get together which is vigil to end gun violence. some people say even though we have a lot of violence in the united states, what happened this time with so many children may be the tipping point. one of those people is natalie foster. >> i like to believe that because it's very innocent, very young children, that this will really cut through a lot of the mess in d.c. i'm a brand- new mom. i have a seven-week-old who i've brought out. and my heart like every parent across america is breaking right now. so when t

don knapp was there. don, what happened? >> reporter: ann, this police operation is just now wrapping up. it ended the way you wanted it to end. they had swat teams here, negotiators, which tells you the two ways it could have ended. but in the end, the suspect gave up peacefully. residents gathered outside their california street apartments as spectators looked on. practically this entire block of california between larkin and hyde was filled with just about every type of emergency vehicle. police officers could be seen climbing nearby rooftops. all of this, the result of what police say started as a domestic disturbance call. >> the neighbor called the san francisco police department, advised us of the situation, at which point our officers responded. they attempted to make contact, during which time they believe that this person may have potentially had a weapon. >> reporter: police evacuated those who lived closest to the danger. and because there was concern the suspect may have a firearm, tactical units were called in.
