kpix 5's don knapp is in antioch with a close call for some homeowners. >> reporter: this stretch in antioch has had a dangerous run of bad luck. in just the past two weeks the two houses behind me have become number 2 and 3 to be struck by out-of-control vehicles. >> we were laying in bed and about 12:20 we hear a loud bang and the entire house shook. >> reporter: he heard a car slamming into his buchanan road home not far from where his elderly mother-in-law was sleeping. >> my mother-in-law was asleep in the bedroom. it could have went in on her. >> reporter: apparently, the car was traveling east at a high rate of speed when it hit the buchanan road center divider went over the westbound lanes on a curb taking out a pg&e transformer before slamming through a garage into his home. >> i ran out to the front yard and opened up the front door and there's a car laying upside- down in the front yard. >> reporter: the out-of-control vehicle ripped through the garage barely missing a car in the garage and another in the driveway. it shattered walls and sent debris to a neighbor's roof. >

kpix 5's don knapp tells us police are investigating whether the man killed was involved in a series of crimes. don. >> reporter: allen, any accident on this busy stretch of i-280 is risky for everyone involved especially risky if someone should get out of the car and run across traffic. when that happens, you have to ask, why would they run through the traffic? it was 5:30 a.m. and dark when this northbound suv struck the i-280 center divide near john daly boulevard. the crash left the vehicle partially blocking the fast lane. the honda civic slammed into the rear. the civic driver received minor injuries. and the suv driver was well enough to get out and walk away. it's what happened after the accident that left the suv driver dead. he ran across the northbound lanes of the shoulder on the right side of the road carrying a duffel bag he had taken from the suv, the man decided to run back across the northbound lanes jumped the center divide and attempted to cross the southbound lanes. he was struck and killed by one or more vehicles. >> people who stopped to help the vehicles were t
