tavis: don lemon is out with a new book about his journey they in louisiana. the book is called "transparent." don lemon, thank you for being on our program. >> before i talk about my book, can i say, genius. i ordered it and i had been traveling and this is what i'm reading. genius, failing up. tavis: put mine down. let's talk about yours. >> just of the lovefest. tavis: the first thing i noticed about you when i first saw you pop up on national television was this news anchor on this serious network called cnn with this baby face. so how often in your career have you been taken seriously as a news anchor? >> that's an important point because i think people think i'm younger than i am, therefore i'm less experienced and i may have less credibility and it's really an embarrassment of riches, so to speak, because it should be a blessing, but i think it hurts me sometimes, actually, in my career, because i look younger. i have a few gray hairs coming in and i wish more would come in so that some people would take me seriously but i don't think it's a huge issue

i spoke earlier with the author of "transparent," don lemon from los angeles. >> thank you, howard. >> there are gay members of congress, there are gay business executives. is it especially hard to come out in television news? >> well, how many people are out? i'd have to ask you that question. there's not even a handful of us, really, in the national media. and so yeah, i think it's really hard to come out. especially since, you know, you don't know what's going to happen. you don't know if you're going to turn some viewers off or if you're going to get people to watch you more. i don't know. but yes, it's really hard to come out. i think otherwise we'd have more members of the media who are out. >> do executives fear that part of the audience would be turned off? and is that a reasonable fear in 2011 when recent polls showed more than half of americans support gay marriage? in other words, is this an old stereotype, or is there actually reason for concern? >> well, i think there's always a reason for concern when you reveal something about yourself that is pe

don lemon is live in new york. now, i know this is probably a tough stuff to have to talk about and the book is called "transparent" and that's exactly what you are. especially when it comes to the whole story line about being sexually abused by a teenage neighbor. how long did that happen to you? >> it went on from -- i guess i was about 4 or 5 years old until about 3 or 4 years until my father died. my dad died when i was 7 and went on until my teens until i went to sdwrunier high school or so, so it went on for a couple of years. my mom remarried after my real dad died and that sort of took me out of the purview of my abuser. so it went on for quite some time. >> i want to you do me a favor, because this much better in your own words than mine, i want to you read this excerpt from the book where you talk about that part of your life. >> okay. so you want me to do this. i wanted you to read it, but i'll do t i have to tell you, i'm a little nervous. i've never really talked about this on national television. so it

i'm don lemon. thank you for joining us. developing news in louisiana where rising water from the flooded mississippi river is uprooting thousands and thousands of lives. new video just into cnn. this is from our affiliate wbrz. earlier today two more gates of the morganza spillway were opened doubling the rate of water now pouring into the basin. this is the first time the spillway has opened in nearly 40 years and all the people in the president path of this water, about 2,000 of them, have been ordered to evacuate. the deadline to leave is right now. the rising water is now pouring into st. landry parish and it is extremely dangerous. alligator, snakes and other wild animals are being flushed out of their habitats into residential areas. officials warn that large gators won't think twice about grabbing a human. let's go to the st. landry parish of crop springs. ed, what do you know? >> reporter: well, don, we are in one of those neighborhoods that got the mandatory evacuation orders a few hours ago. as you look around her

. >>> i'm holly gorani in for don lemon today. you are in the cnn newsroom. well, breaking news out of st. louis this mother's day. an unruly passenger aboard a continental flight is blamed for causing the plane to divert to st. louis. it had taken off from houston and was originally headed to chicago. according to airport officials in st. louis the passenger tried to open the forward exit while the plane was in the air. the passenger was restrained and the plane eventually landed safely. at this time all we know is a male passenger was taken off the plane and other passengers resumed their flight. and a second airliner also had to be diverted today. a note found aboard a delta flight triggered a security scare. flight 1706 was en route from detroit to san diego when a flight attendant discovered a sis pishs note in the restroom. the plane landed in albuquerque. it spenl several hours in a remote area while the luggage was screened and passengers were interviewed. the security sweep of the plane found nothing and the plane was cleared to fly out to san diego.
