in 2008, donna edwards made history becoming the first black woman elected to congress from maryland.r group with ties to aipac, democratic majority for israel, has spent over $425,000 to help defeat edwards. the two groups also poured money into efforts to defeat other progressive democrats, including nina turner in ohio and jessica cisneros in texas. we are joined now by peter beinart, editor-at-large, jewish currents. he recently wrote an article headlined "the israel lobby's new campaign playbook." peter beinart is a professor at the newmark graduate school of journalism at the city university of new york. thank you for joining us, peter. can you talk about what donna edwards is confronting right now in maryland? the level of money being poured in to defeat her? >> it is extraordinary for a house race to see one organization, one super pac spending almost $6 million. what we're seeing across the country is aipac's super pac is often spending as much as the campaigns themselves are spending. partly this is the result of citizens united, 2010 that created super pacs, entities that c

former congresswoman donna edwards tweeted out after her loss this week. not a better place when people who believe in peace and human rights are quest. how hard is it, congressman, for elected democrats to call out human rights abuses, in places like the israeli occupied territories, or in saudi arabia, when those countries are our allies, and when there are so many lobby groups think tanks, willing to go back on their behalf, run primary acts against people like yourself? >> well, mehdi, you know, i just do it anyway. you know, i've been one of the members of the egypt human rights caucus. i have spoken up against what's happened in kashmir. i speak up for ending the occupation, so israelis can live in peace with the palestinian neighbors. and we just have to do the hard work to make that happen. i've called for the end of the u.s. collaborating with saudi arabia in its war and blockades in yemen. and i guess, it gets you some enemies, mehdi, but i'll tell you something, brother, it is not worth winning some office or having some title, and not doing wha

most recently donna edwards running in maryland, and here you've got, you know, this united democracye amount of money they are spenting like $4.26 million opposing donna edwards, $3.7 million in all other spending. they come in and in many of the races they are the single biggest source of ad money and ad spending in that urrace, and it's -- it has a -- a pretty big effect, it looks like. >> a massive effect. i think in the maryland race, both donna edward and her opponent directly spent less than $1po million. aipac spent almost $6 million so that has a big impact in a house race, and it's not just aipac. what you're seeing in some of thesewh races is that when aipa goes after a progressive candidate because they have some sympathy for palestinian human rights, then you tend to see other groups that also don't like progressives, not because of israel-palestine but because they think they might be too tough on the fossil fuel industry or the health care industry, and they pour in their money as well and so what you have is essentially the creation of a whole new generation of joe man

amy: we just did a segment on donna edwards race in maryland, where the issue of israel and palestinely raised, even by the aipac super pac. they raise other issues. is that the case in your district? are people aware of outside money? rep. levin absolutely it is the same. they may do some mro targeting. 8% of the electorate of this new district is jewish, and they may be doing some micro targetinof them. but there is a double deception here really, amy one is where the money is coming from. most of this money is not even coming from democratic capital sources, but republicans, republican billionaires le paul singer, the guy tha founded whatsapp, who also support right wing causes. the second part is, they don't en talk about why they are giving the money. they talk about other things. whenever they think will be effective to make their chosen candidate when the race. what you have here is a real threat to the democratic party being able to choose our own nominees that we send to the general election in november. this could go to other issues. you could have big pharma, enbridge, exxo

be remiss not to mention the open house race in maryland's fourth congressional district where donna edwardscorporate lawyer glenn ivey. a race to watch because it tests the strength of the pro israeli lobby. they spent a hefty sum propping up ivey and visible in a lot of races outspoken women of color who they -- we may not get the final results tonight. maryland is expecting a large number of mail-in ballots and, by law, they can't start counting those until thursday. so we are going to have to be patient. it will be difficult to make projects if races are close. >> eva mckend, thank you for all of that reporting. mark mark, congratulations on the book. it gets to a central questions in this race and maryland and so many races leading up to the midterms. that is you've got gop candidates fighting for trump's endorsement in public, and many telling you different things behind closed doors. >> yeah. that is a central dynamic that any reporter in washington has experienced, you know, many, many times over the last few years which is the contempt between what people in the republican party who

joining our conversation former maryland congress and washington post columnist donna edwards and katty kay is with us. very bizarre set of republican candidates in these three different states. katty, we're going to go through a few of these race by race, but give me your big-picture takeaways. your chances in the senate and whether these gop candidates make the job easier for the democrats? >> well, it's clearly what democrats are hoping. these are tight races and they are races that democrats would really like to win. they have some very solid candidates in john fetterman and tim ryan and particularly candidates who are appealing to voters that don't always get appealed to by democrats. john fetterman has been running ads on fox news. tim ryan has been appealing to some republican working-class voters in the state of ohio. as you pointed out, some of these republican candidates have a pretty checkered background and some strike against them in terms of their record and some of the things they've said recently including jd vance. the question is will republican voters come home? in th
