donnelly, that would be 50. manchin that would take to you 51. there's a track record, these three already voted for a trump supreme court pick. all three of them are fighting for their political lives this year. in states that trump won in a landslide. that's the ace in the hole republicans are kind of thinking on this. they got the 51 and got some tremendous pressure on these three democrats, keep an eye, unlessen in florida, said he's not an automatic. doug jones, he's not up this year, but he's up in 2020. not a long way off and alabama you know, the circumstances he won that seat very unusual, going to be very hard for him to hang on in a state trump won by almost 30 points. when republicans look at this and say we got the votes, we can get this through in september, that's what they're thinking, they're thinking hey, long shot a lose murkowsky and colins, even if do you, there's going to be tremendous political pressure on the democrats to go along with the administration to try to save their own jobs. >> pretty extraordinary how a looming

donnelly in indiana, trump took it by 20. donnelly, heitkamp, manchin, they voted for neil gorsuch last year, they're vasing voters in these states so if you had 48 and you got these three, that puts you at 51. we mentioned by the way he's not up but doug jones in alabama. he's up in 2020. again, there will be a lot of pressure on him so there are a lot of democrats in theory who could be in play here to vote for this nominee for some very self-serving political reasons. they want to get reelected. that's balanced with the potential threat from collins and murkowski. joining us to talk more about this, norm ornstein co-author of the book "one nation after trump." and the author of gop gps and marah gaye, a member of the "new york times" editorial board. on the signals being sent by collins, murkowski, folks trying to decode that, i was looking back at the history of supreme court nominations from republican presidents over the last generation or so and not a lot of break imagine the the republican party on these things. what

that's where heidi heigtkamheite donnelly, facing voters this year. if that happened again, north dakota, indiana, west virginia, if those three did what they did last year, and voted for trump's court pick, that 48, it becomes 51 and republicans have more than enough in fact to get the confirmation. it is not just those three maybe that republicans are eyeing. bill nelson in florida in a very tough re-election race. rick scott, the republican governor, challenging him. does he want to vote against the trump court pick just weeks before the election? what about claire mccaskill out here in missouri? a state trump won handily. other wild cards. how about doug jones in alabama? he's not up this year but he's up in 2020. we know alabama is a very, very pro-trump state among usual circumstances. again, when republicans say they are confident they can get a nominee, they can get confirmation, they can do it all before the election, it is because, look, even if murkowski and collins were to defect, there are a lot of options on the board to get republicans

we've got joe donnelly in indiana, heidi heitkamp in north dakota, joe mnuchin in west virginia. to vote in late october potentially against the president's nominee would seal their respective defeats, would it not? they're the trump state democrats. they're in states that president trump won by significant margins in 2016. >> that's why trump is meeting with some of these democrats, to try to get them on his side. i think a lot of the democrats will be under pressure from their own caucus not to abandon the democratic party on this. the democratic senators have a united front. we shouldn't underestimate the fact that there is likely a blue wave coming. the democrats could be very alone in their own party if they support a nominee who turns out to be conservative down the line. a lot of people are expecting nole door sistine chapel to be -- neil gorsuch to be a little bit more moderate. yet, in his first year or so on the court, he's been really tough on issues, and he's even gotten some of his own colleagues on the court concerned that he is bucking the traditions of the court t

there were only three democrats who did that -- heitkamp, donnelly and joe manchin. that's potentially somebody else on the map in one of these key races. as you point out, knenelson may in more trouble than a lot of his other colleagues in some these red states -- rick scott, his challenger of course can pour millions of dollars of his own money into that race. bill nelson really in the hot seat there. as this math unwinds the pressure is inside the democratic caucus. and really on chuck schumer as to can he hold them together. the progressive base of the party, as you know, is going to be demanding purity on this, they're going to be demanding democrats hang together. but the electoral reality just a few weeks out potentially from a mid-term election for a lot of these democratic senators is going to be quite different than, say, the half dozen or so it 2020 hopefuls that are also hanging out in the senate democratic caucus. >> very different political calculations for kamala harris versus a joe manchin. there's a lot of range there. nbc's kasie hunt on capitol hil
