donner pass was given the name by a previous train that was stalled in the snow. the forward section can be seen ahead. provisions for the beleaguered passengers are loaded which because of their caterpillar thread can get inside the snow. the weasel is an amphibious train. here is the city of san francisco hopefully blocked by snow drift. it's been here three days with the passengers on board. a news magazine camera man is the first newsreel man there. for the last two days the passengers have gone without heat. 60 were overcome by gas fumes that are taken off on sled stretchers but none suffered serious injuries and they report that spirits were cheerful on the snow bound train. then the monumental task of digging out the streamliner begins. passengers are on their way home but for two more days the train lies embedded in its prison of snow. >> and that is it for this week's second look. i'm frank somerville. see you again next week. next door neighbor, died. he and luke were pretty close, so we have to tell him. i'm a little nervous about it. i think we should

up here on donner summit. the snow coming down. it started about 4 a. 30. in the last hour or two, we've seen a steadily snowfall. that's turn things into white. we talked to the superintendent of the caltrans area up here in the sierra saying they are 20, 30 minutes out from having chain controls under the present conditions. the highways are open. if you are watching this to the bay area, by the time you get to the bay area, the chain controls should be in effect with a heavy band of moisture moving its way up to the moisture. great news for the drought. they are expecting up to two feet of snow at the highest elevations at the top of some of those resorts. here at pass levels, could see about a foot of snow. again, great news for the mountains. we're looking across it. boreal. some ski resorts have shut down. boreal was making snow. they operate a summer camp. i imagine they are trying to stockpile as much snow as they can for their early summer camps that they do. certainly a welcomed site in the sierra. a sign of the times, why we so need the snow up h

. >> reporter: good morning from donner summit where the snow started coming down around 4:30, just snow showers. getting ready for significant snow in the sierra. probably one of the most powerful storms of the season as resorts are getting ready for as much as 2 feet of snow in highest elevations and pass level could see a foot or more of snow. that means for drivers coming into the sierra, get ready for winter driving conditions. you will need those chains, you will need a four-wheel drive with good snow tires if you're traveling into the mountains today as the forecast is expected to deteriorate through the morning hours and into the afternoon here in the sierra. certainly great news for the drought as we need any moisture we can get up here. that snow, again, totaling as much as 2 feet over the highest elevations of the resort. unfortunately, a lot of the resorts have pulled the plug on the season. for those that are open, could be a great powder day today and tomorrow adding to the money they desperately need this time of year as they start to wind down their season. if you are com
