a live look at donner lake on i- 80. are no chain requirements on highway 50 or 88 but if you are traveling that way you may want to pack them just in case. here's the look along the peninsula. we have delays in menlo park park. sky 3 over the scene northbound 101 in willow. they have tow crews out there now so now we know it is in the final clearing stages. two lanes were blocked and we are seeing delays backed up to the embarcadero road. 280 is the best bet for the stretch. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights were turned on about an hour ago more than that and so you are stacked up now east of the maze. we problems trying to get to the eastshore freeway. westbound 80 towards the bay bridge toll plaza, the parking lot and macarthur maze, there is a wreck there. and it is backing up toward powell. you can really see it on the sensors. that's blocking one lane. 880 is fine. that's a good note. everything is looking great near oakland coliseum. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." let's check thi

i want to show you video from earlier near donner pass. at this point we've already accumulated upwards of 6 inches of fresh snowfall up there. you can see here these are very light, fluffy flakes of snow. the system is coming through. actually had winter-like characteristics associated with it. but it's unusual to see a system this cold when we had temperatures in the 70s here in the bay area. it's some really whacky weather for us today. what you'll notice is thunderstorms along the spine of the sierra nevada. down in the south bay we're seeing pretty significant development. the area of red is a thunderstorm cell. as we get the daytime heating getting into the afternoon, the chance for strong thunderstorms in our neck of the woods definitely a possibility. we don't want to rule that out. a lot of this activity will stay on the east bay and south bay. we'll let you know how much shower activity we're expecting in your microclimate because widespread activity is on the lay later on. coming up in my next report. back to you, scott and kris

this just in to our newsroom from donner summit. i can tell you right now we could accumulate up to a foot of snowfall later on today above 7,000 feet. we're actuallying looking really good for that. as we get into this afternoon and tonight, with some lingering activity all the way in to tomorrow morning. so i do want to take you to your radar and show you what we are expecting as we get into this afternoon. that's when we have the chance for thunderstorms right here in the bay area. radar picture shows you though all that snow, all the lightning firing off up in tahoe. temps in the 50s. we're on our way to the 70s. even with that snow coming down. very unusual system out there. 60s at lunchtime. 70s to finish off the day. so here is deal. we've got high pressure to our south. and that's a warm and moist air mass. that's going to collide with this dry and cold system dropping in. it actually originated in the gulf of alaska. so that's what's going to produce all of that instability. best chance for thunderstorms will be in our loca
