donovan richards is queensboro president in new york city. thank you so much for being with us. wow, you guys were hit so hard. what's it like in queens now? >> reminds me of hurricane sandy. we have been here before, but it is catastrophic on so many levels, the loss of life, and thinking about those whose basements were underwater during the moment, whose livelihoods were effected by this, who lost everything. it has been a tough time, not only being the epicenter of the pandemic, but now to face continuation of climate change here in the borough of queens has been tough. >> i want to ask short and long term. start with what you're facing immediately. what needs to be done in queens to get back where you need to be, are you confident that you as a borough and citizens will have money to help get there? >> i want to thank president biden. i'm pretty confident we're going to get, it is going to take a lot of work, all hands on deck to ensure resources and checks are put immediately into the hands of those impacted, but also we have to think about those who are displaced, federal

we're joined by donovan richards. thanks so much for doing this on this labor day.hed the video of the attempted rescue of those three people in the flooded basement in your bureau. water level is amazing and it is also just heart-breaking to look at this video. what are you going to do to make sure no other family has to go through this after a big storm again. >> well, let me start by saying it's been such a tough year for queens residents coming out of this pandemic and now to be hit hard by this storm. and, you know, in my formal capacity before, i was a chairman of the environmental protection committee and the city council where we actually did secure about $2 billion in infrastructure money to build out new sewer systems within queens county. however, you are talking about 40 years of this investment, jim. we were behind the eight ball. people are talking about climate change that just arrived now. i know coming from the city council where my district was hit by hurricane sandy that climate change had arrived a long time ago, and i'm very grateful for the pre

joining me now the borough president of queens, donovan richards.ing? how are the folks in the neighborhood? >> it's a tough day for all 2.4 million residents. we just got an update that there are three more deaths in the borough. we anticipate that number will grow. it's been a tragic day for the residents of queens county. >> you know, that's devastating news that there are even more and could be more. tell us what happened. we were talking to somebody in westchester counter. they were saying 15 minutes, the water came up so fast. how do we -- what did we not do that we need to prepare for in the future to stop this from happening? >> one, i think, more extreme weather events are going to happen more often. we know that already. the bottom line is that washington has been lagging or dragging its feet on this infrastructure bill. we need it done yesterday. this is about infrastructure investment and climate change. if we're not taking drastic and bold stances on policies that can prevent this moving into the future, we're going to continue to see m

. >>> joining me now donovan richards. donovan, thanks so much for being with us once again. you just joined the president as he toured the damage in your bureau just a short time ago. what commitments did the president make as these residents are trying to recover from the storm? and were you satisfied with what you heard? >> well, i'm never satisfied until every home is rebuilt and people's livelihoods are put back in place. but one of the things i'm very appreciative of that the president did is he went into people's homes, he spoke to them, acknowledged their pain. fema was there, so it was great to have the administrator there letting folks know that there is assistance right now for them, which is something we didn't see during sandy. it took about a month before we saw fema during that hurricane. so to have fema on the ground and boots on the ground today was very important. and then lastly pushing this infrastructure bill. there is rhetoric and then there is dollars. and queens residents are very tough. we're resilient. but we also know that money is a big piece of th

donovan richards is the queens borough president. thank you for being here.t a difficult time for everyone there to watch and experience what's happening. the images and aftermath of this historic flooding, they're almost apocalyptic. and sadly, at least eight victims in queens died in basements. that's according to the nypd commissioner just this morning. i mean, it's just awful. what is the latest on rescue and recovery efforts there? >> well, our heart is hurting tonight, laura. let me start by saying that we lost nearly a dozen folks and we hope those numbers don't increase over the course of the next few days as we do rescue and recovery efforts. i want to thank the men and women of the nypd and all of our essential workers for the work that they have done. but this storm was of biblical proportion. it came fast and furious. and we are doing everything we can do to ensure safety and recovery. >> i want you to listen, president richards, to one queens resident. her home totally flooded. >> i can't think anymore about how i feel at this point, because of t

joining us now is the queensboro president donovan richards. good morning. what do you want president biden to see during his visit and if you get the chance to speak with him, what would you tell him? >> i want him to see the devastation firsthand, the pain that many of our residents are facing right here in queens county. i want him to see how people's livelihoods were destroyed due to hurricane ida. due to the storm, this flash flooding storm. i also want him to deliver. you know, we need money, we need federal intervention to really upgrade our infrastructure both gray and green infrastructure. and now is the time to get it done. and another thing i hope that comes out of this is this infrastructure package passing in congress. i mean, think about this. we're having a debate now about climate change once again and this is nothing new. we saw this during sandy, we saw it during katrina. and now is the time for action. >> experts have been warning that we'd get to this moment and worse for decades. so, it appears that the time to act is now. i wan to ask y

donovan richards. >> thank you congressman and thank you to the governor and the mayor for their supporting or into the wee early morning hours. i want to thank all of the agencies. first off, let me start by saying that we mourn all 2.4 million queens residents mourn the lives of those lost on the early morning hours due to this catastrophic storm. let me also just say that we've surveyed a lot of different communities across the borough and i'm happy to say that rosedale and the rockaways, because of the investment by the city, i want to thank the mayor for his $2 billion investment into queens, we saw a different story based on that investment. but we know that is still not enough. and that is why we're here today. we need washington, d.c. to move with a level of urgency. we've been here before. in hurricane sandy. we still are waiting for the rockaway reformulation plan and we have a beach plan, there are many parts of this borough that historically have flooded and it is only go ting to get worse. if we don't address climate change we'll continue to lose lives across this borough an
