and - doosh what did your father and mother do for a living? >> my mother worked in a dress shop and my father worked, well, we had a little italian bakery which he inthe inherited from hs uncle for a while. i have written storys about that. and he also for a while was a taxi driver. >> you don't know this, but for several years, some of our callers on our call-in shows have called up and admonished me or us. >> they want to know who this person is and his background? >> no. no, they said you never have on this network howard zenn, you never have on this network chompsey or michael parenti. they always put those three names together. >> that's nice. >> the other two have been on. this is your first time that i know of you have been on. >> right. >> why did they, for years they have linked the three of you together. >> well, we all, we all write a lot of critical things about the powers that be. we have a dissident viewpoint that is not usually heard on the mainstream media. and so i guess they feel, and we all have a readership, a fairly substa

hemingway himself - doosh did they look fondly on their home country or were they expatriates who leftt behind with a reason? >> i think they left it behind in order to find it. many of them, and this would be true for hemingway that america was getting too constricted, too prohibitive, too rule-oriented. it wasn't open to the new way of seeing the world as new to art. so they were looking for an artistic freedom sh as well. but i think they loved america. and they wrote about america. hemingway went to france and he wrote about michigan. he wrote about his own pets that he wanted to recover in his art. it was definitely a love affair. >> and susan beegle, while they were in paris in the 1920's, there was beginning to be great political upheaval i in europe. we were beginning to see the rise of marxism and the like. how did that affect this group of people? >> i think it particularly affected hemingway because he was there as a reporter. unlike some of the other literary types in paris who were there, he was working for a living, writing for the "toronto star" writing weekly features.
