thousands fled to the jfk library in dorchester, including senator john kerry, who we saw walk in at a short time ago. he had surgery earlier this month. the late senator lying in repose at the library. some showed up well before sunrise this morning. 25,000 people were able to go to the place before the close it down at 2:00 this very early morning. years ago, at the same location, ted kennedy said we welcome the wide group of friends gathering here who found so much inspiration in his life, so much warmth in his friendship, so much pain in his loss. what were the last few moments of the service like? >> very moving. daschle had to turn people away. there were a few stragglers they lead into the library. -- they actually had to turn people away. some people wanted to pay respects to the senator, thousands line up before dawn to enter the jfk library behind me. interestingly, the family was out in force. many relatives were here to thank the mourners for their support. we heard from the senator's youngest son, patrick kennedy, making a rare public remarks. here is what he had to say.

it is a rough afternoon for some spots on the shore, with heavy storms extending itself into dorchester county. some flooding in low-lying areas over that way on the eastern shore, with visibility extremely reduced. showers popping up between baltimore and washington. that will slow down the commute along i-95 in some spots, and storms coming in from the mounds out of hagerstown. the potential is there forced heavy showers and storms through the afternoon and into the evening hours. it has cooled off a little bit. we started this week with readings getting close to 100, but a little cooler today. mid 80's in some spots, but temperatures have dropped into the 70's in cambridge in salisbury. once again, the setting sun will not enter the thunderstorm threat. there'll be some isolated showers around the region through kennecott and even through the early morning tomorrow. we are stuck in a pattern that will take a few more days to break. 72 for the overnight low tonight. this front just got south of us and is beginning to stall. a little weather disturbance in the upper atmosphere that is

in dorchester, the jfk library, to pay their respects to edward kennedy, who as you said was senator for massachusetts for 47 years. before the hearse and his coffin and the family get here, though, they will take what amounts to a sentimental journey through the streets of boston. they are expected to leave the kennedy compound about 12:30. it will take them about 90 minutes to get up here. when they arrive in boston they will first head to the north end. the motorcade will go past st. stephens church where the senator's mother rose was baptized and where her funeral mass was celebrated. and then they will move on to samuel hall, which is where senator kennedy declared for the president in 1980. mayor of boston will ring a bell 47 times, each time to signify one of his years of service as u.s. senator. the motorcade will pass by rose fitzgerald greenway where his mother played as a child and the office he held, he first had in boston at 122 bowden street. it will then come here and the body will lie in repose from 6:00 tonight until 11:00 for general viewing. that is when we expect

held committee codman square is in dorchester where rose kennedy happened it to grow.t connected the committee health center to ted kennedy and the kennedy family. host: how did you get involved on the local level? guest: the fact that there are committee held senators is a tribute to him. ted kennedy is a bald in every major piece of legislation that affects poor people in healthcare that exists on the books in the u.s. community health centers which serve millions of americans, mainly low-income, but not exclusively, are the product of his legislative expertise and ability to foster compromise to get bills passed that will help people. as a result we have about 1200 health centers in the country to deliver services to poor people. host: when the senator talk about this on a local level, did he talk about how he first got involved in the issue and what made him sensitive to it? guest: i have heard stories about when he was in the plane accident and hurt his back and was in hospital for a long time that it made an impact on him. all that i know is when he came to our h
