[applause] so the book actually was one of the finalists for the national book critics circle award so congratulations on that. can you tell us why you started following the story and give us a little bit of background on a? >> first of all shelley and i would like to thank everybody associated with the book festival for having us here. we have been here for 22 hours and have already fallen in love with this down. it must be fate but is 10 or 11 miles away from here right now in the penitentiary. we asked him if he wanted to attend but when the phone didn't ring we knew it was him. [laughter] shelley and i have covered, first of all shelley grew up in dorchester south of the bossed bossed -- boston line. my entire maternal side is from south so we would have grown up learning about holstered by osmosis. everybody that we were from knew he was a hoodlum and it gangster and a very dangerous guy. at approximately the same time different newspapers were really paying attention to him and
