we are glad to be joined by doris goodwin. you are supposed to be smarter than the rest of us and someone spent her entire adult life studying history in the presidency, what should we make of this, how do you process what we witnessed last night? >> it is interesting when you think of what has made candidates stumbled in the past, is usually when they make a gap and something that brings up their temperament and it happened over and over again last night. he sighed and sort of made facial expressions just like gore did in that disaster debate. when asked certain questions on first view, he was not prepared. there was worries about, the most extraordinary thing to me was when he was asked about zero taxes. he's the messenger that a lot of people feel that the system has been rigged. how can the messenger say it was just smart of me not to pay taxes. of course, as we have been talking about, there was worries about how he felt towards women and he let himself be baited to that. she seems more dynamic than energetic like he did.

i should comment on very briefly on my relationship with doris. thank you very much for the too kind introduction. doris is more than a mentor and adviser to me. it's a little bit more unique than that. she's actually my role model in terms of what it means to be a fair, a just, and a dignified government servant. and so my friendship with doris is extraordinarily important not only to my life, but to my work. i'm a political refugee. i was born in cuba, and my parents brought my sister and me to this country to flee the communist takeover of cuba. my parents did not want to raise their children in a communist regime. and my identity as a political refugee was extraordinarily important to my upbringing and my parents were very focused on instilling in me a deep sense of what it means and what it meant to be a refugee, to be an individual displaced from one's home and the country in which one's parents dreamed of raising their children. in 2010 and 11, i had in the course of my work as the director of u.s. citizenship and immigrations services the

dori avenue - near washington and eastern. firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a very small room in the back of a single story house - that appeared to be converted to a small apartment. most of the flames were put out by neighbors with a garden house. a man was found on the floor - near smoldering items - with burns on the upper half of his body. investigators say it was an electrical fire. anthony: you mentioned doris kerns goodwin, she wrote about taft and roosevelt era where there was ae country at that time as well. what steps or measures do you think the american president can take to help close that income divide? >> >> well, income inequality has been increasing and it's as bad as any time since the 1920s. i don't think you can solve that problem overnight. part of the problem is that the people on the lower part of the economic scale are going further and further down because they're not educated, they're not getting good jobs, the low minimum wage jobs are not ones that are going to make you have a productive income for your family, so i think it's getting worse and worse. i think the great recession exacerbated the problem, and although we've come back, the people in the lower part have not come back, and they are doing worse than probably they've ever done. trish: and you think about the fed's role in all this, anthony, as well. i mean, david, they have left interest rates at record lows for the longest time on record. and perhaps inadvertently, helped create
