former president and supervisor of the board doris margaret ward. she was born on january 27, 1932 in chicago. she passed away this weekend at age 86. while in high school, in gary, indiana, doris became active in the civil rights movement. during college at indiana university, she participated in several sit-ins at bars and other public areas. after moving to san francisco in 1972, she became a community college trustee and was elected to the board of supervisors in 1979. it would be another 11 years before she became the first african american to serve as the president of the board of supervisors. doris didn't begin her career as a politician. she started as a teacher. and her passion for education and for helping young people never waiverred. she had a profund sense of compassion for all people, compassion which carried through all of her work as a community college trustee, a member of the board of supervisors, assessor, recorder for the city and county of san francisco, and a true community leader. doris always had the courage to stand up and sp
