how can the space agency compete for talent when dotcoms pay more. a discussion with pete worden and apollo astronaut ed mitchell recalls his trip to the moon. we are joined by sarah lacy and richard hart this week on "press: here." hello, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. rocket science may be difficult but the biggest challenge of the new century at nasa may not be the rocket science but the scientists. nasa administrators like pete worden are facing a problemface agency, competition. not just competition for private commercial space ventures but from the riches of high tech. to a young college graduate the lure of google just down the street from one of nasa's space center means a math mat ig has a choice. adding to pete worden's problem, the talent pool is shrinking. fewer american kids are graduating with engineering degrees. >> three, two, one. >> worst yet, nasa's mission has been unclear lately. the shuttle is headed to retirement. at ames research center, research on america's next space ship, the o'ryan, continues under a cloud of uncertainty. >>

suffered because of crime, i believe, and some of the economic downturn that we have noticed post dotcom implosion. upper haight has always been just a mecca. it deserves collective attention in making sure haight ashbury is not compromised but also an area we want to make sure is accessible for all. cole valley neighborhood, you know, to haight, is a bit of a hamlet, an enclave near the haight, in between there and ucsf and inner sunset. inner sunset, it's just a great swing area. what i mean by that is you just have such a great combination between merchants and residents, mass transit hub, a lower pac heights, certainly wants to enjoy the prosperity of pac heights but not want to lose its diversity that spills over from the fillmore western addition area. north of pan handle is a composite of everything i have just said. those are the aspects of the district, neighborhood by neighborhood, that makes it a challenging and needy district, but one i love and am responding to. >> ♪ >> welcome to another addition of district sf, sftv's profile of san francisco neighborhoods an their issues.

why does the average person who's not involved in dotcoms, who's not a shareholder in some of these companies, the average person at home, why do they care? >> well, i think the simplest explanation that i've ever heard is let's say you're sending an e-mail to grandma and you just want to, you know, tell her what's been happening with your life. you just want to ensure your e-mail's going to go through. a company's not going to stop your e-mail from being transmitted to grandma or it's not going to slow it down. and that's really what net neutrality is about. >> my e-mail, regardless of how not important it is, at least to everyone else. to my grandmother it's very important. >> yes. >> it gets treated the same way as everyone else. >> yes. >> now, this has always turned into a moral issue, particularly in silicon valley. i don't know anyone in silicon valley except for clearly someone at google who thinks that there should be data prioritized in certain ways. i mean, it seems a no-brainer to those of us, especially at techcrunch and the start-ups that we cover, that tiering the internet is a
