hi, doug. >> hey there.the very beginning stages of this snow that is going to bring considerable accumulations. the most we've seen in a while in the area. why a lot of snow over the area had a little snow hole right now, but everyone else light snow and moderate snow spreading east towards winchester and a whole lot more especially southwest of the metro area where we see the core of this storm system. it looks like it will be late at night. 10:00, 11:00 and then when the majority of this stuff moves in. the storm center itself is located just east of jackson, mississippi, tonight, way down off the map here. a lot of rain and some ice. but this is all snow in the bitterly cold air so you can see how many hundreds and hundreds of miles of snow is going to translate to our area. but because the storm is going to stay to our south, the heaviest accumulations will stay south of the metro area closer to the storm track. you'll see that reflected in the snow bands here in a moment. but in preparation of the snow

we begin with chief meteorologist doug hill who has the latest on it all. doug? >> maureen, and the leading edge of that line of snow and snow squalls just inside the beltway now on the west side of town. let's go right to our live doppler radar in the storm watch 7 weather center and you'll be able to see everything moving in quickly now. it's taking its cold old sweet time cominhe mountains. you see in the darker blue areas, that's the heavier snow. fairly narrow line but it will make it through the highly urbanized areas here along the route 1, route 95 corridor into the city over the next 30 minutes and briefly, it will snow heavily and temperatures will start to fall giving a glaze and quoting on the roadways. as temperatures fall that means lots of icy possibilities out there. but good news is it will move through and be out of here and skies will clear. when skies clear later tonight, temperatures will fall even more quickly. quite a bit of snow along the leading edge of this front from pennsylvania to southern virginia. we're under winter weather advisory

doug and veronica tracking it all in storm center 4. where is it now, doug?> it's right over the i-95 corridor coming right on through the district. the good news here is we're not seeing the snowfall rates like we saw with that saturday storm system that dropped a quick inch in some locations. so if you get a coating, that's going to be about it. we have not seen too many problems back to the west on some of the roadways. some of them are covered toward montgomery county, especially those secondary roads. that will be the case through prince george's county, part fz anne arundel county. the storm itself, frontal boupdry coming right on through i-95 now getting close to bow we croften, clinton, right now around mt. vernon as it continues to move off to the east at about 20 miles per hour. behind it, we just get cold. there will be a few more snow showers in parts of the area, especially to the north of the d.c. metro area. but the cold air is what we're really watching out for. the entire time, that's been the biggest part of the story. >> reporter: that's ri

doug hill is here with a look at our first forecast and doug we could be breaking some records this weekend, i hear. >> tonight, it looks like tomorrow morning will be the coldest morning that we've had all winter and in addition to the extreme cold we have gusty winds that are knocking those feels like temperatures down even lower. wind chill advisory remains in effect for the entire region. at the moment 12 degrees in gaithersburg. 18 at frederick and reagan national. and 15 at andrews air force base and gusty winds to go along with that. that's producing wind chills or feel like temperatures at 2 above in frederick. feels like zero at reagan national airport. this is tough stuff. day after day of it gets old. if you're feeling a little cabin feverish, i don't blame you a bit. there's going to be improvement over the weekend but with that is going to come some mixed precipitation, snow, rain, going to be a mess. in the meantime let's concentrate on this day with the gusty winds and wind chills highs only in the teens. wind chills at zero or close to it all day long. and in the nighttime,

doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. doug? >> interesting view out there with the snow behind us and sunshine. potomac river with ice and snow on. it that's what the bitterly cold air has done. we'll see some melting on roadways. that's good. late tonight, we'll refreeze it again. temperatures upper teens and lower 20's in most areas. up to 25 at reagan national airport right now and the snow off the coast now. everything off shore. we're seeing the sunshine. again, we're warming a bit. i don't think we'll get to freezing. at least we'll get into the upper 20's. what's going to happen around the area for the rest of today is temperatures getting close to 30. tonight, we'll drop into the teens. that means a refreeze and then 32 tomorrow. that's 32 tomorrow before the next arctic cold front moves through. future cast shows the timing. midday hours tomorrow. sunshine and increasing cloudiness. snow coming through the mountains with the next front and again, it may coincide heavier snow showers moving through during the rush hour

let's get back to doug now with another check of this cold cold forecast. doug? setting in one minute from now. so temperatures are going to drop quickly tonight. they're starting at a low level. let's get into it and we'll look first at a time lapse the next couple of hours. this is the way the sky has been blue. little streamers are actually snow showers and flurries. some reach the ground. most got wafted away with the winds and reinforcing push of this arctic air that's dropped the temperature to 10 now in cumberland petersburg west virginia and in gaithersburg. we'll drop down air temperature wise as skies clear to 2 below to 8 above by morning. that will be cold enough to threaten local low temperature records for tomorrow morning. and as we continue to examine the reason for this cold air, it's shown on the futurecast. steady stream of air from the arctic. it moves across the area. we have sunshine and cold weather tomorrow. then the storm system to the west for the weekend may start as snow saturday afternoon. eventually mixing with freezing rain especial

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at our first forecast. doug? >> hello there. the wind are supposed to back out a bit. there's solace in that. cold not so much. everything is frozen solid. rooftop camera, snow still on top. the ice and the temperatures are tough. take a look at this. 9 degrees in gaithersburg right now. 15 at reagan national and 10 at washington dulles on a day when our average high is supposed to be 48 degrees. we'll peak somewhere at 19 degrees. that's 28 29 degrees below average. then it will get mighty cold tonight and those bitterly cold temperatures tonight will play a big role in what's going to happen in our area tomorrow weatherwise with an area of low pressure developing over southeastern oklahoma as it moves northward, it will bring more moisture up from the south and in time it will bring warm air. in time, it will bring plain old fashioned rain. as the center moves out it will leave us with a pretty deep level of pretty cold air especially closer to the ground. when this starts moving in tomorrow, it will start as snow and it will

we've got crews all over the place, but we're going to begin with doug. doug as i understand it heavy stuff hasn't really come down yet. >> no i think we are going to get some o of the heavier snow through the overnight hours tonight. we did have one heavy band that brought one to two inches of snow quickly. that moved out. then we've seen a lull in the action. we still have that lull back towards the west. it was over d.c. earlier but now starting to fill in just a little bit across the area. the one region that has not seen that lull is down to the south. we told you all day this would be the bull's-eye south and east of the metro d.c. area. you see this wide area open up of drier air. i'm waiting on this batch right back to the west here. this is what i think will come in and help to refill this area as we move on through the rest of the overnight hours. because of that though we are looking at and revising our snow totals just a little bit. but here's what to expect. watching the lull the roads, though they are still a mess. we have already gotten qui

doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. doug? >> we're doing better. up to 34 degrees right now outside of the belfort furniture weather center in arlington and temperatures will climb a bit but the icy stuff is behind us. let's give a look at conditions in bethesda. cloudy skies there with a light east-northeasterly wind. don't know if we'll see much sunshine sunshine. there's a clearing trend in some breaks as far and west. cloudy and cold day. precipitation this morning pushed well to the southeast of the metro area. 36 degrees at reagan national and 34 in frederick. 35 degrees in quantico at this hour. we'll see the possibility of a little sun breaking through the clouds later. 43 is the top number and some areas may stay in the upper 30's. at least it will be well above freezing. and the increasing northerly wind is 10 to 15 miles per hour will start to dry things out a bit. we'll come back and talk about a little warmer day for a day and a half. and then the next arctic front that will slam through the area on thursday. we'll talk again shortly.

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. doug? >> hey there. it looks like most all of the rain has pushed east of the area. winds are going to get gusty. let's get right to it. and here's the story from the belfort furniture and storm watch weather center. wind advisory until midnight. about everybody gets to play. winds will be quite gusty over 40 miles an hour. temperatures will fall but will take a bit. still in the 40's. it's a good deal. the winds will dry up a lot of the wet pavements and sidewalks. but later this evening, whatever moisture is left in puddles may well freeze. here's the story for wind speed and direction now. 24-mile-per-hour winds sustained in winchester. 16 at washington dulles. 2 21 at andrews. those wind speeds will only increase as we head through the afternoon. forecast is for skies to become partly sunny, windy. temperatures will slowly but steadily fall, as you see with a wind advisory up until 12:00. we'll have more on that and check out the next seven days as well coming up in a few minutes for you. >> thank yo

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with when the snow that is, will move in. doug? >> hey there. yeah there's between 11:00 tonight and 3:00 tomorrow morning, we may get more snow in four hours we've had in the entire winter so far. that tells you how little snow we've had. winter storm warnings in effect from 6:00 tonight until noon tomorrow. farther north and west, too far away from the storm track to give more than a few inches of snow. there's no worry at all about what kind of precipitation it will be. the rain is way south. here comes the snow from the storm center actually the center of circulation still southwest of arkansas so it has a long way to go. it will move south of the area and off the coast. so as it's in transit, south of our area it will interact with the cold air and give us plenty of snow to fall and every flake is going to stick. look at air temperatures right now. 12 degrees in gaithersburg. 17 at reagan national. temperatures aren't expected to change very much today. check the time stamp. 1:00 this afternoon, moving across the mountains. we get to the af

chief meteorologist doug hill has a look at the numbers and we're talking really dangerous numbers, doug. >> for if you're not dressed properly, any amount of time outside, it really has the same effect in your skin with the 8 below with the winds as if it was actually 8 below on the thermometer with no winds. it's real numbers. let's get started with what we're dealing with now and that is the ice on the potomac. all area rivers most all of them iced over near the chesapeake bay iced over. look at these numbers falling now. 12 at washington dulles. 10 in gaithersburg now. 17 at reagan national airport. and through the overnight, down from 2 below to 8 above and as steve rudin told us that will put us in territory to tie or break record low temperatures early tomorrow morning. look at the core of the cold air over southern canada and the great lakes. that will move in overnight. nice warmup out west. get a taste of the warmer air on sunday. not until then. 19. that's it for tomorrow. but then we have to keep our eyes on the weekend and that's going to bring the possibility of snow or a w

our live team coverage starts with doug in the storm center. doug? >> i think we will set records moving through the weekend, into the early portion of monday. today has been on the cold side for sure. we woke up to windchills in the single digits. right now take a look at the windchills. we're in teens and lower 20s so, not nearly as bad as it was. still, windchill of 17 at this hour 21 in washington 25 out toward the fredericksburg area 19 in winchester. tonight if you're going out, it's going to be chilly but not all that bad, 26 by 7, 23 at 11:00 and the wind will stop. it picks up tomorrow and look at this. the windchill watch in effect for windchills between 15 and 25 below zero for areas back towards frederick, back towards loudoun county back towards the i-81 corridor even around d.c. we're talking 10 to 15 below zero in this region and we also have a high wind watch. i think that is probably the bigger case here. winds could gust tomorrow close to 60 miles per hour tomorrow night into the day on sunday. so we've got a monster of a storm comi

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at our first forecast. doug, another cold one? >> yeah dulles beat the record like by 15 degrees this morning. right now, we saw the ice on the potomac being a regular scene around the area. sooner or later it will break up and go away. not in the short term. that's for certain. cold air locked in overhead. temperatures 19 in hagerstown and frederick. 21 near andrews and 24 at reagan national airport. looking for a high approaching the 30 degree mark. a few high clouds, lots of sunshine out there so even though we'll remain below freezing enough sunshine will melt a little snow but then again, that's subject to refreeze once the sunshine goes away. we've been watching and i talked to you if you're with me yesterday archfternoon, talked about a couple of storms to the south gave me an unsettled feeling. there's a new one forming up to the southwest and as that develops, that one is going to be a much stronger system. question is how close will it get to our area. in advance of this second storm, winter storm watch is in effect. tod

that is fast-moving affair doug kammerer. >> it is. be out of here most likely by this time tomorrow so only here for the next 12 hours or so but it's coming down right now. storm team 4 radar showing we have snow across the region and that snow will be coming down fairly heavily moving through the rest of the night. everywhere you see it snowing here we've already gotten reports of some accumulated snow especially northern virginia portions of southern maryland. you could see where this storm is back down to the south. there's a lot of moisture continuing to make its way in and the temperatures are extremely cold. this is probably one of the coldest snowfalls we've seen in a while here with temperatures only around 12 in gaithersburg 16 manassas 15 in huntingtown and 16 in pawtuxet river. because of the cold air, that's why we think some of these numbers may be a little higher and that's why we added that plus. we'll auk about that in a second. winter storm warning in effect for everybody, including towards the pennsylvania line all o

. >> but we start with chief meteorologist doug hill with a timeline of the storm. >> more snow coming our way overnight. snowmachine showing moderate areas of snow moving from west to east. just to the west, a break in the action, but more snow filling in. the wider view, most of the action to the south and east, but more snow moving to the west. we thought all along the heavier amount would to the south and southwest of the city. that has been the story. by the time it ends early in the morning, we think four to six inches. a good six tyo o 10 inches south and east. more areas of snow, especially south and east of the metro. with just a few inches on the ground tonight, so far we have had problems driving and walking. steve rudin is in the stormwatch 7 weather center with that story. >> the snow continues to fall, but not as rapid and as much as earlier. the streets of rosslyn are plowed, but mostly snow-covered. everything that continues to fall overnight will stick as snow. look at the temperatures out there, today's high 20 degrees. yes, just 20 degrees at reagan national airport.
