chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a lookhe first forecast. hey, doug. doug: hi there. plenty of sunshine for the moment. what will happen later this afternoon is the clouds will increase and this evening, rain will move through the area. for the moment beautiful. 69 degrees with the sunshine. outside of the belfort furniture weather center and the reagan national airport dew point is low, too at 67 degrees. 68 degrees in frederick right now. annapolis picking up a bit of a bay breeze and 58. reagan national can see the temperatures drop a couple of degrees and winds coming across the potomac river could do that. the general theme is we're going to push through the upper 60's to around 70 area wide. it will be a very pleasant afternoon but during the mid afternoon hours, you will notice an increase in cloudiness from the west and that cloudiness will produce showers. i think they'll be later tonight. looking at radar trends right now, certainly could happen in some areas west of town by very late this afternoon or early this evening. keeping a very close eye on that. so

doug, tell us about it. doug: ok jummy. we had the heavy rain this morning. skies are bright. we're sunny. 72 degrees. winds continue out of the south-southwest and may pick up. you're absolutely right. we expect lines of storms to potentially be heavy and even severe to develop later this afternoon. just east of the appalachians and as they develop, we'll watch for the possibility of strong winds and hail in some of these. 74 degrees in fredricksburg. you can see the satellite and radar showing the heavier rain. this morning moving out, you see a few lines developing west of the mountains. they'll start to really blossom once they get east of the mountains probably after 3:00 to 4:00 this afternoon. we, because of that have a possibility of that severe storms. get hail and wind probably will be the biggest features so when we get close to 80 degrees this afternoon and again, 3:00 to 7:00 that's the best time frame for the majority of the area to see the lines of storms coming in. and then as far as the effects, well, we expect possibility of large hail and damaging wind. ever

doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. hey, doug. doug: hi there. been watching rain from earlier this morning. moved off east to the eastern shore. so for the moment outside of those areas, most of them have a cloudy, damp day and a little touch of light rain and drizzle. stuff that's too light to be detected by doppler radar. but there are areas to the west that we can definitely detect by doppler. here it is. complex of thunderstorms from columbus that arced back southwestward into a northwestern kentucky. there's a lot of activity with that as far as heavy rain. what will happen in the afternoon hours is across the mountains it will encounter this very chilly damp stable air so i think thunderstorms should diminish rapidly once it hits the blue ridge and we'll have more rain this afternoon. look at the difference in temperatures, dark green, 40's to near 50 here. elkins west virginia, 70 right now and different story in the warm air and here in the cold air, result will be a chilly afternoon and more showers late this afternoon and more periods

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. doug? doug: hey jummy. plenty of rain. temperatures very mild. later today, the wind direction will change and the temperatures will start cooling off. the one thing that will not change is the rain or the threat of rain every minute here through the rest of this tuesday. as far as the radar goes doppler shows wide area of rain. few breaks here and there with the patterns. little specks are heavier localized downpours. no lightning. some periods of rain at continuous times through later tonight. here's the reason for it. the rain stretches westward into kentucky. southern sections of indiana so all that rain is going to make a move to the east-northeast and will eventually get out of there. it's going to take until much later this evening. look at the numbers. very mild locally in the 60's and a little cooler north of the metro area and through the day, we'll see the slow drop in temperatures and occasional showers ending sometime between 7:00 and 9:00 tonight. look ahead to the rest of the week and weekend

doug? doug: all right, autria. we may well have a severe weather alert this afternoon even though it's cool and damp and in the weather biz called very stable air. but this is all about the change. numbers wise, we're at 50 degrees at reagan national. in south, we're in the 60's already. there's a very small area between the warmer air and the cold front coming in from the west. it will be a squeeze play this afternoon. as i've been telling you for a couple of days, it depends on how much sunshine we get for how long a period of time that will determine whether we get severe thunderstorms or a few garden variety storms. this is not the cold front. this is rain ahead of the warm front. that will spread eastward the next few hours. after that i think rapidly the skies will brighten. the sotherly winds will help to bring up warmer air. this is a wider view right now of this first area. a little indication of a second line along the cold front itself so actually, this little spot here that we expect to move overhead. l

chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast today. hey, doug. doug: hey, jummy. temperature are 65. well into the 70's at this time yesterday. no worries about storms today. we'll have a lot of sunshine and gusty winds and temperatures are going to be close to 70 degrees in some spots. let's look at reagan national with a live shot from the rooftop camera behind it. 65 degrees with a west-northwesterly wind at 16 miles an hour. 63 in frederick and 61 degrees in baltimore at this hour. so we'll be watching for temperatures to make a slow climb. gusty winds will bring in drier air. these are the wind speeds now, not the gusts. and sustained winds 13 16 miles an hour locally. 20-mile-per-hour winds measured at andrews air force base and then we'll see the winds help to dry out the air and dry out the ground a little bit and actually pretty nice day. there you see the hour by hour through the afternoon and through the evening will be clear after peaking out close to 70, we'll drop through the 60's. upper north and west, another cold front on the way

doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast for us. hey, doug. doug: kind of breezy and chilly out there right now. here we are in the second full month of spring and we have weather that will remind of us late winter. lot of clouds sun and gusty winds. 17 miles per hour at reagan national. only 57 degrees. it's 48 still in gaithersburg and cumberland. 51 degrees now in annapolis. the winds are a story too, and yeah, we got a bit of a chill you can calculate with temperatures in the 50's and winds 15 to 20 miles per hour makes it feel a few degrees cooler and later tonight, it's going to get downright cold. here's the story. breezy chilly maybe a sprinkle towards the maryland-pennsylvania line this noon. temperatures fall more quickly and in fact, the winds will diminish lighter tonight and as temperatures fall, there's a freeze watch up. you see it shaded in blue. frederick, carroll county maryland washington county straight down to the blue ridge and points west along i-811. could get below freezing for a couple of hours in the morning in those

we're going to go back to doug mckelway on the ground. doug? >> reporter: eric here we are at the corner of woodbrick road and winds fall. the police officers are blocking the roadway. i would estimate 150 or so officers. if you look beyond that way off in the distance there's more police officers decked in riot gear and billy clubs blocking traffic that way. it's calmed down a bit since you first came to me. the fire set in the middle of the road is dying out. it's fairly small. the remnants of a liquor bottle thrown in our direction a while ago is here and the people who threw it i don't know exactly where it came from but there were a lot more people milling about. most have retreated back into their homes and things are relatively calm here. we understand from some eyewitnesss that they took a left and are heading down towards pennsylvania avenue down towards city hall and the inner harbor. and i think just based upon the crowd dynamic that i see people probably are joining in and then milling off, milling about and retreating as they pass

chief meteorologist doug hill joins us with his forecast. doug? doug: the question is will not need your umbrellas tomorrow but you will this evening. there's no rain at all at the moment but give another 10 or 15 minutes and another batch will come through. key here tonight is the steadiest, widest area of rain has moved east of the metro area and now we have patches of rain metro washington south and west, steady areas trying to reform winchester and north to martinsburg. you notice the subtle movement to the northeast. this is the beginning of the end of this storm center and stationary front moving out of the area clearly on the right-hand side of your screen the heaviest rain through norfolk, outer banks and off the coast of delaware. it will be a process over the next five hours or so for the rain. turn into little batches and coming to an end. temperatures right now 56 at reagan national. that's a degree higher than last year. eventually eventually temperatures will fall overnight as skies clear in the overnight hours. i think maybe another

doug hill is here with the look at the first forecast for today. doug? doug: gusty winds, kind of early in the day for us. normally, our showers and gusty winds come later in the afternoon. it's a rapidly moving cold front. let's tell you the weather story on this wednesday. beautiful weather out there at the moment. but this is all going to change as the heavy line of showers moves into the area here. some lightning and thunder developing as well and that's going to be the story here for the next hour or two. winds are gusting from 25 to 35 miles per hour and that's going to be a story into the afternoon hours. a larger picture shows the rapidly moving area of rain with a few areas of thunder and lightning move in and some snow falling across pennsylvania with the strong cold front. we have an advisory for the winds gusting over 50 miles an hour north and west of the metro area. what will happen over the next couple of hours, there's a possibility that that advisory could be expanded eastward. showers come in with the thunder, they'll be rapid movers an
