only down about 18 points on the dow jones industrial average. the market did get good news in tha economic steps released this morning. domestic product which came in at an annual rate of 1% in the fourth quarter and that's better than the market was expecting. so that's the good news. the bad news is that that growth is half of what it was in the third quarter. so that may be a little bit worrisome. the big company coming to apple's defense against the fbi is amazon. and the reason that's significant that that amazon itself may be eventually in the position to write software, if you will, for drones and things like that. and so they are saying that apple should not give into the fbi's request to open up that -- that cell phone used by one of the san bernardino bombers. apple right now is fighting that, as you know. amazon, microsoft and a lot of other big tech companies coming to apple's defense. shareholder meeting about three hours from now. the question -- the big question for wall street is whether or not among all the things on the agenda

we're on the plus side for the dow jones industrials average. not bad, but we'll take it. the dow jones industrial average up 50 points at this hour and the nasdaq and the s&p are also positive. gopro swinging to a loss in the fourth quarter. that was a surprise for wall street. very weak sales and people on the street are wondering whether or not the -- kind of the wearable cameras have peaked because that's basically the only product they make. they're trying to innovate, but so far, wall street isn't buying it. the stock is down 10%. also dunkin brands, fourth quarter and the comparable same-store sales slipped and that is because mcdonald's all-day breakfast is really eating in, no pun intended to the bottom line so dunkin says it will have to revamp things a little bit and that was a surprise loss and dunkin is low or the day, as well. a couple of earnings misses to leave you with today. >> those all-day egg mcmuffin, boy, putting a hole in dunkin' donuts. >> gopro slipped and dunkin dipped. you like that? >> it may be a night for a warm cup of coffee because we had s

the dow jones industrial average, the s&p, the nasdaq after by 2%. but once again, joe, the nasdaq showing the most pain in the follow-through from friday. it is the nasdaq, it is financials and where these buybacks that i expected. 80% of the s&p reported by february 5th. the contribution to buybacks in the month of february, very significant. up around 7% of total annual buybacks for context january around 4%. authorizations year-to-date, apple $30 billion available. where are the buybacks? that is going to be what lifts the market. it's done it since 2010. that's what we're all waiting for, and it's surprising we're not seeing it yet. >> pete, i don't know what's going to lift the banks. the worst-performing sector showing more carnage today. if you go down the list of the biggest u.s.-based banks, the carnage is stunning. >> right. >> i looked earlier. morgan stanley down 5%, and the list goes on. goldman, jpmorgan, citi, what stops the madness? >> the european banks. we look to china, and last week nothing but pmis and then all of a sudden went

the dow jones industrial average gained 212 points to 16,697. nasdaq climbed 39. s&p 500 added 21. and as for oil it reversed course to settle up nearly 3%. but it wasn't just oil that got stocks moving higher. comments from a fed official may have also contributed to the optimism. james bullard, the same james bullard who long pushed the federal reserve to begin raising interest rates, reversed course last week and is backing that stance this week. >> one of the things i want to do is get away from trying to predict how many increases there's going to be in a year. we want to be independent, i think we want to better coordinate with market on this the idea that we will move but we'll move on good news. >> reporter: what, if anything, does that tell us about the state of the u.s. economy? if the data does not warrant another rate hike should we be worried about a recession? on the one hand bullard says -- >> no i don't think the probabilities are particularly highlight now. >> reporter: but on the other hand -- >> you always face risk and we are at a lower trend g

furthermore, 93% of all world markets have done pretty much what the dow jones does. there is a "but" though. you get lots of rallies in bear markets. the rally is not just a one-day or one-week number. this rally is going to be much better than that because indices are so pushed down recently, they're ahead of themselves. and can rally right back to where they were, the debt cross and 200-day averages. which is quite a decent rally. in a normal year, you rally up to, say, may. this one is not going to last that long. you ask when will the top be, the wednesday, the 23rd of march after lunch. >> wednesday the 23rd of march after lunch? >> yeah, but that's a long rally. >> so why is it wednesday, the 23rd of march that the rally will stop? >> well, by then, i think we will have got up to where massive overhead resistance is on most charts. not just on the dow. and we'll run into that. and furthermore, the rally is caused by firstly, hedge funds that are short for profits for their buyers. a third of all stocks are down between 30% and 40% to value investors for the yen
