the skyline for downtown berkeley could undergo some drastic changes. ast night the city council approved a plan to revitalize the downtown area. but critics are opposing a plan to build seven buildings ranging from 120 to 180 feet tall. uc berkeley has already reserved two of the buildings. the city will take applications for the other buildings on july 1st. >>> 7:54, let's see if things are moving in contra costa county with an update with sal. >> reporter: it's not doing well. 6:80 this morning we had a big problem. they cleared a multi car crash. these are pictures taken earlier of the crash that was eventually moved off but was there long enough to cause a huge traffic tie up on 680 from the venetia bridge almost, not quite. and 632 was back up. these were pictures that we took at the height of the crash here. you can see not only is 680 slow but some of the side roads are slow as well and it's taken a little while to get this cleared up. let's move along and take a look at live pictures. san francisco northbound 101. a little bit of slow traffic ap

. >> reporter: the view from the berkeley hills to downtown could look a lot different in 20 years. biggest structures in the city, 17 stories high. this is how the view could look in 2 decades. tuesday night, the city council moved forward with its planned construction of five tall buildings over 75 feet. you can see how they would look in these pictures. three of them could be as high as 180 feet, similar to the tallest buildings in downtown now. and two of them could be 120 feet, about 10 stories high. they would be located along shaddock and university avenues. >> one of the things i hear from people is that they want the downtown to be more vibrant. there are people that don't come downtown because there's no stores. it's going to be more of an issue for people that live around the downtown, particularly my district. from that new development will be contributions that will go toward a fund to fund new open space and streetscape improvements. the new development that happens downtown will contribute toward community benefits that will help revitalize our downtown. >>> decision
