it was five weeks ago this weekend that hannah graham went missing from the downtown charlottesville mall. it was after that the largest search in virginia's history began. that search has gone from a missing persons investigation to a death investigation. police are saying that it was during a routine search on saturday that a team of volunteers, along with law enforcement, began searching and abandoned property in the county outside of charlottesville. >> countless hours, thousands of hours. have been spent by literally hundreds of law enforcement and civilian volunteers in an effort to find hannah. think perhaps today proved their worth. a search team from the chesterfield county sheriff's department was searching an abandoned property along old lynchburg road when they discovered what appears to be human remains. >> reporter: shortly after that, the charlottesville police called the parents of hannah graham. at this point the remains have not been identified. that will be the job of the medical examiner who will perform an autopsy to try to determine the cause and manner of death

hannah graham was last seen after midnight last month in downtown charlottesville.on surveillance video, seen here, as was 32-year-old jesse matthew. police believe that he is the last person to see her alive, and, in fact, he's already been charged with abduction in connection to this case. i want to bring back our guest, jean casarez, and fbi assistant director tom fuentes and criminal defense attorney, danny cevallos. if i could begin with you, jean, just a statement coming out from the police now here, talking about the discovery around noon today, which is interesting. as you had said earlier today, you were told an area had been roped off, taped off around there. they're now asking for anyone who recalls seeing suspicious activity vehicles along this area in the last month or around the time she disappeared. this is the next stage now. they're looking at this scene, trying to find other clues. describe what happens now, what more can they gain from this area? >> this is a crime scene. this is now an official crime scene, and that tape should be around it for q

she was last seen on surveillance cameras leaving a bar in downtown charlottesville with 32-year-old jesse matthew following behind. he has since been charged with her abduction and has been linked to the case of morgan harrington, a 20-year-old virginia tech student who was found dead in 2009. matthew is scheduled to appear back in court in december. well, let's bring in cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes, joining us my skype from livingston manor, new york. a john jay college of criminal justice. tom, let's go to you first at this point. they have found human remains. they have called off the search. they notified hannah graham's parents. why are they not naming her? >> well, they're going to wait up until they have an official identification which will happen at the medical examiner's office. probably will require dental records to be specific, but at this point the police do not name the person. nor do they call it a murder investigation or a suicide. it's a death investigation until the medical examiner declares that the victim was murdered. >> and, larry, we heard earlier

i'm standing in downtown charlottesville. behind me is the mall area where hannah graham disappeared. they have been searching around this area for quite awhile now. we are stretching into the fourth week and today, we accompanied searchers as they went to look. take a look at video. looking at a few of the 55 searchers combing the area. they are 80% done with the area. they defined as most likely to yield results. they get a boost in help from searchers on horses, plus more boots on the ground from stafford. they hope to be 100% done with this search area by the end of the week. we ask chief longo from the police department what happens after that. >> i don't see an end in sight until we find hannah and maybe that's naive. maybe that's not the most sufficient way to use the resources we have. but we're going to continue as long as it takes. >> tomorrow, they are getting help from two imaging analysts. they are basically going to be helping guide the search because they have this aircraft over the weekend that had a camera. t

was last seen early saturday morning after 1:00 a.m., near the tempo restaurant and bar in downtown charlottesvilleinutes before she was seen on surveillance video outside of this irish pub, and then walking under a small overpass alone. she starts running, but it doesn't appear she's being followed. and when she gets to the downtown mall, you can see in surveillance video someone is following her. police now think the man was a good samaritan who they don't believe was a suspect, was concerned she was intoxicated and says he backed away once he saw her looking very comfortable with a man who looked like a friend. that friend, police say, was matthew. a week after graham disappeared, matthew walked into the charlottesville police department on his own and spoke with a lawyer but sped off before answering any questions from investigators. the police chased him and lost him. four days later, a sheriff's deputy in texas took matthew into custody after getting a tip from a woman who spotted him on the beach. >> jesse's been described as sort of a smooth-talking, kind kind of person on the outside and s

hannah was last seen five weeks ago today in downtown charlottesville, and i spoke with an eyewitnessperson to remember seeing hannah, and this woman told me that she saw hannah under the arm of jesse matthew. and they were walking downtown. he is the last person seen with her. and police have charged her with that abduction. the state police have confirmed as well that jesse is linked -- there is a forensic link which links him to the case of morgan harrington. morgan was last seen in charlottesville five years ago yesterday. and her remains were found 100 days later. now the state police have yet to say that it's his dna. we picked out a stop and recognized here, it could be morgan's dna that was found on an object he had. we just don't know. but speculation is the fact that it's his dna. and that's important, because if it is his dna, well then we know he's linked to another rape and beating in northern virginia in 2005. because the police have already linked morgan's case with that case four years before. so you are right to say that we are looking at mounting evidence -- the poli

debra alfarone is live from the downtown mall area in charlottesville where witnesses say they last saw the missing uva student alive. >> reporter: it could be tomorrow. it could be weeks. we don't know yet when we'll get that information back. what we do know is it was 35 days ago hannah graham was last seen by a witness here on the downtown mall in charlottesville with jesse matthew, the suspect now behind bars charged with her abduction. the one thing we all want to find out after finding those human remains 10 miles from here, everyone is keeping tight lipped about what happens next. saturday's bombshell. >> chesterfield county sheriff's office search team today located human remains along old lynchburg road. >> reporter: is being followed by sorrow and silence. no one will say when we'll know for sure if saturday's discovery is actually hannah graham. the deputy says something inside told him to look. a warning, the rest of the story could be considered graphic. >> that deputy says he found a skull, scattered bones, no hair, no flesh. we asked forensic expert jonathan arden for his

this is three miles away from downtown charlottesville, where matthew and hannah graham were spotted e disappeared. late that friday night, september 12th, graham is seen at the grand mark apartments in charlottesville, and then just before meeting at the camden plaza apartments a block away. graham covers a lot of ground on foot that night. less than an hour after being seen at the apartments, graham is captured on surveillance video walking up to o'grady's irish pub. she's turned away at the door and then seen running past a gas station ten minutes later. then at 1:00 a.m., graham is spotted on the downtown mall in charlottesville. then walking past tool's jewelers. 1:20 a.m., she texts friends to say she's lost. 2:00 a.m., graham seen outside the tempo restaurant on the mall with jesse matthew walking behind her. that's the last public sighting of hannah graham. tonight, investigators are now looking at possible ties between the graham case and that of morgan harrington, another college student who went missing in charlottesville under similar circumstances and was later found deat

that's when she disappeared on the downtown mall in charlottesville.re looking at there is the abandoned property where her remains were found. we now know those were, in fact, her remains discovered last saturday. it's been a week of testing, autopsy results still out. but the confirmation on the i.d. is what we have. and that is that it is, in fact, hannah graham from fairfax county, went to pest potomac high school, was a second year at uva. so we know those remains were found about ten miles off the grounds of the university of virginia. that also happens to be within a few miles of where jesse matthew, who is the suspect in graham's abduction, stressing the abduction charges in this case. that happens to be where he grew up and lived with miss mom for many years. now, jesse matthew, who you see right there, being held on abduction charges as well as sex assault charges in connection with a separate investigation in fairfax county, has not been added any charges when it comes to hannah's death. i just heard from the commonwealth attorney in albemar
