he just watched the fireworks right there in downtown dubai. from what vantage point did you see the fireworks? looks like i lost tafeek. we'll try to reestablish a connection there. becky anderson back with us in dubai. so becky, perhaps you heard some of what ken robinson was say in that the decision to carry on at the same time put all resources in to tackle this fire may have offered some reassurance to people there who are used to drills take iing place, whether be in the hospital or these high-rise buildings. what's your perspective on that? >> yeah, i think it's a slightly wider story than that. we see the concerns across european capitals as to what may or could occur during these new year's celebrations. we were reporting on the higher preparedness of times square this year. i think there's a sense that people are concerned bt get. ing on with these new year's celebrations that everybody is allowed to enjoy them. there was no sense at all that this was any sort of terrorist incident here. it was clearly, as far as authorities are concer

it's the high-end address hotel in downtown dubai. it's a five-star hotel located right near the skyscraper, the burj khalifa. it has 23 stories 20s of them are said to be engulfed in flames. dubai is the united arab emirates most populous city. right now there's tens of thousands of people there for their new year's celebration, which is set to start an hour from now. officials saying they have no reports of injuries. as soon as the flames were spotted they began an evacuation of the hotel which witnesses described as an orderly evacuation. so far no injuries reported and the cause of the fire at this point is not known. it started around 9:30 p.m. local time there. as we said the guests were evacuated and we're going to go back right now to john huddy live in our middle east bureau with the very latest for us. hi, john, what can you tell us? >> patti ann, we're hearing some conflicting reports from witnesses about the evacuation efforts, whether there was panic. one guy tweeted out there was panic, people trying to get out of there.

an intense placed sweeping through one of dubai's luxury downtown hotels. dramatic and terrifying picture, hardly but the crowds had come for. the blaze broke out less than three hours before the city's plan to spectacular new year's fireworks display. from thew meters away world's tallest building, the fire apparently started on the hotel's 20th floor. before long, flames engulfed the side of the 63-story building, sending out billowing smoke and scattering, blazing debris. inside, one resident said that the alarms went off, it was absolute pandemonium, as people rushed to get out of the building. theingly, with the help of fiber great and the civil defense team, it seems everyone was evacuated. apart from one person who suffered a heart attack, there were only moderate and light injuries. one jazz singer was performing inside the hotel as the blaze started. >> absolutely stampede. it was incredible. i was actually never so terrified. all the women, so glamorous, took off their high heels. everybody just ran. left everything. there was debris falling down.

dubai. this is an area downtown known as the address. a building that's a luxury hotel, five-star hotel in the heart of dubai's tourism zone. we can see that there's a massive fire that is breaking out right now. you are seeing some of those images there on your screen. we are about two hours away from when dubai was expected to hold large fireworks display. that was actually supposed to be centered around an area not too far from that. that is the highest building in the world. we are joined by msnbc's cal perry who has been monitoring this situation. tell us more about this location, what's going on there right now. >> this is a both residential and hotel building called the address hotel. the address hotel actually has two locations in dubai. we are looking at the downtown location right now. these are live pictures we are showing our
