ellicott city, maryland, where a train derailment left two people dead. >> megan mcgrath is on the scene with developments. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're standing on main street in downtown historic ellicott city. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see the accident here. you can see the rail bridge that crosses over main street on top of it. you have the train that was involved in this accident. you can see the crews on the scene documents exactly what happened. the cars are slightly off kilter. there were 21 cars that actually derailed in this accident. this is an 80-car train. we're told it was carrying coal and that some of that coal spilled off on to a parking lot on to some cars that were parked in a parking lot. this all began a little after midnight last night. apparently, according to officials on the scene, there were two people on the rail bridge, not exactly sure what they were doing on that bridge, but we're told they were on the tracks and that's at the time when the derailment occurred and presumably the engineer, the driver of this train, tried to slam on the brakes. now, crews still here on the scene. they are going to be here for quite some time
