iowa city gateway project. the city wants to raise dubuque street to keep the road from marion or downtown cedar rapids to palo could get much quicker. the iowa d-o-t expects the highway 100 extension in cedar rapids to open just after thanksgiving. this will connect highway 100 past edgewood road to covington road, which leads to palo. the project costs $215 million dollars. eventually, highway 100 will reach u.s. 30 in four years. the d-o-t says good weather has helped the project stay on schedule. new mayor...for a day. that was the top prize for the c-r gavel challenge. cedar rapids mayor ron corbett is announcing the winners of the challenge today. the challenge pushed people to support area businesses that were forced to close during the flood of 2016. those that visited and posted their pictures to social media using the hashtag #crgavelchall enge were part of a contest for the mayor title and other prizes. every year, we at kcrg t-v nine and our show you care sponsors honor nine we call them our "nine who care." we are once again accepting nominations for people who you believe deserve that recognition.

started earlier this afternoon in iowa city as high school students walked out of their classrooms at city high and west high schools. the students made their way downtown where more people joined their watched the protesters and followed them on their march. sam, what did protestors tell you tonight? well it's important to point out that these protests may have begun with high school students but then more joined in. at one point there were hundreds of people marching through iowa city. nats chanting hundreds walked through the streets of iowa city this evening. walking straight through the middle, disrupting traffic so that no cars could pass. protestors in iowa city are falling in line behind groups like the a-c-l-u. u.they marched from the community center downtown through the ped mall and eventually to the pentacrest at the university of iowa.this was all organized by a group of high school students who say they were called racial slurs -- and told to go back to where they came from after the election.
