"occupy oakland" protestors tried to stop the violence. some of that got violent, as well. so there's a lot of talk this morning about how to get the movement back under control. and as frank said anser hassan has been standing by he it "occupy oakland" camp at frank ogawa plaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. as most people are getting ready for work a lot of the "occupy oakland" protest movements are going to sleep. let's show you live pictures here at frank ogawa plaza. some people are still -- they say they are going to monitor the situation and keep an eye out for cops. we are getting some indication that the cops may move in or at least that's the concern for some of these protestors here h right now we don't see cops in the immediate area. but we have seen cops throughout the city and

joining us from downtown oakland, kraig, how does it looks right now? >> pam, i am at 14th and broadway, we had a line of police in riot gear facing off against demonstrators, that situation has eased up. some encouraging news, there group of people who are -- there is a group of people who are in disagreement with the violence that is going on. they are trying to do as much clean up as they can, but in the middle of the night it got really bad and i want to show you, police tell us this was being thrown, things like this was being thrown at the police. this brick weighs 10 pounds. but it was not just bricks, it was roman candles molotov cocktails. >> it began -- >> reporter: it began peacefully enough, but a group of people broke off at 16th and broadway. police moved in and tried to get those people moved out and that's when the violence started. they threw those molotov cocktails, roman candles, anything they can get their hands on, police responded by deploying tear gas. they had bean bags they were shooting and they made at least 100 arrests. a spo

cbs5. >> let's do back to downtown oakland this is what happened around 7:45 on the corner of broadway and 11th. cell phone video shows a protester banging on the hood of a silver car in the middle of the intersection. that is when website witnesses say the driver tried to speed away. the camera was there moments later and saw the man on the ground. the car stopped again and. an an angry crowd gathered screaming at the driver. >> he was coming through the intersection and we were walking that way. he just missed me, he rushed me and he just sped up and then i guess he -- hit some other people. . >> reporter: a woman was also hit by the car. paramedics took the man and woman to the hospital. they will be okay. officers questioned the driver and then let him go which angered the crowd. >> one of the main targets today the banks. >> some downtown branches closed as demonstrators marched on them. others never opened at all. people vented over the bailouts and what they say is corporate greed. we were in the crowd. >> there has to be at least a thousand people here. they are loud but peacef

trains, i have to tell you, their jaws drop when they see the amount of vandalism here in downtown oakland. someone broke this window that you see here. but we've seen demonstrators with occupy oakland trying to clean it up, that woman posting a sign saying i'm sorry. one demonstrator said that a separate group decided to try and reopen a vacant building as a homeless shelter last night. and when police showed up, this group got nervous and agitated because they already had a clash with police last week and then it deteriorated. over night oakland police tried to clear the area around a vacant building that pro efforts had taken over near frank ogawa plaza. bottles and lit flares were thrown at police as officers launched tear gas and bean bags. dozens were arrested and after the damage was clear. spray paint, smashed windows, this is tully's coffee shop where occupy oakland protest ares cleaned up saying this was not their message at all. >> some people are more angry and frustrated. sadly the aggression inside is being let out the wrong way. we need to come into this peacefully. >> repor

their window was broken along with several others here in downtown oakland this is on broadway next tothe payless shoe store at 15th street. protesters on 16th street took over a vacant building overnight. they say it was foreclosed on and they were going to take it back. police say they ordered the crowd to leave. they say protesters threw rocks, lit flares and roman candles and bottles at them. police were given the order to use tear gas and bean bags. this was around midnight. they got the building cleared out around 2:00 this morning. protesters say some demonstrators were hurt. they estimate 60 people were realized. some protesters tell us they are frustrated that a splinter group turned a peaceful process into a -- protest into a destructive event. >> i wish people would have a consensus on what to do during a protest and not do this kind of stuff. but things happen when you are doing things such as this. >> reporter: at the tully's coffee shop at frank ogawa the window was broken. protesters say they pull the vandals away from it. they patched up the window and left a note point

we're here in downtown oakland the scene of the occupy oakland and wall street protests that talk a little bit out of hand as you can see right here behind me the wells fargo bank branch was the scene of one of the protests at this specific area obviously the windows got smashed out we were talking to some of the witnesses they saw several people of faces were wrapped in black sort of scarves their faces were heading in stark contrast really to the behavior of the occupy wall street protesters for the most part here in downtown oakland we have not seen this kind of destruction of property and mass it was quite interesting actually to see some of the witnesses sort of disagreeing about these tactics you know the destruction of the means of wealth the property is this something that could perhaps gain greater attention to the cause or something that gives the protesters a bad name something that on the face of the movement exactly is now with the movement is about it's about freedom and peace and equality and a few an artist like behind all this is the same people trying to smash the whole f
