. >> they visited the remember them sculptures in downtown oakland. after the visit, they were heading to the studio of the sculpture's creator. >>> richmond city council voted 5-2 last night to put a soda tax proposal on the ballot in november. if approveds it would tack on one penny per ounce on sugary drinks sold in the city. the sporters say the goal is to help children. but critics say it will negatively affect businesses and low income people. the proposed soda tax would generate an estimated $2 million to $8 million and that money would be used to support youth sports and nutrition programs. >>> the amgen tour of california bike race began stage four within the past 90 minutes. . >> firefighters battling a warehouse fire in downtown oakland made an unexpected discovery, an illegal marijuana operation. tonight police are trying to find the owners. the fire was reported about 4:00 this morning at a warehouse on broadway near 30th street. flames shot about 20 feet into the air. it took fire crews several hours to get those flames under control. once they did, at the back of the warehouse they found about 200 pot plants. a large filtering system and an electrical system that had been alerted, altered to support the grow operation. >> blew my mind. i had no idea. they're quiet tenants, nice people. older couple of people that use the place as i an traunt, warehouse. that's the only thing i'd ever seen. >> police are waiting to execute warrants so they can remove the plants and other evidence. officials say the fire caused about a half million dollars in damage. >>> volunteers cleaning up a south bay river made a gruesome discovery this morning finding the body of a man in his 50s. no foul play suspected at this point. police say the volunteers found the body about 1

people in downtown oakland were not ready for the downpour that swept through this afternoon. it was an unusual beginning to a holiday week end that is usually seen as the unofficial start of summer. >>> the great highway in san francisco was shutdown for blowing sand. an employee tells us that conditions are even worse today than yesterday. there are closures in both directions between lincoln and south. now, we will have an update on current conditions and about the weekend warm up. >>> a sailing event got together. the first one allowed since the deadly boat crash. it is a 3-day race from san francisco to monterey. it is sponsored by the sa san francisco yacht club. just yesterday you will remember the coast guard lifted a band on open water sailboat racing. the restrictions were put in place after five people died last month in another yacht race. >>> a proposed indian casino in north richmond has gotten a thumb's down from reg haters. the band has been fighting for years to build a 2,,slot casino on land near the parkway. the interior department rejected it today saying t

it got started early in the downtown oakland area over issues including financial inequality and among other things. mostly peaceful, thousands of people. by 12:30 police say that it started to turn ugly. people were throwing things at them, bottles, paint, they they are say when they tried to mick an arrest officers were surrounded and it got violent. they r tear gas into the crowd. police tell us this morning that they are looking at the mums, 25 people arrested, including a nell my arrest for assault on an officer. banks and business windows, again, boarded up, police cars set on fire. news vans damaged. our news van has paint it as well. one of the things oakland police said they wanted to get the public works crews out here very quickly so that people showing up this morning can go ahead and get back to business as usual. i can tell you that there are a lot of businesses boarded up. not a lot of broken windows. you don't see a lot of damage. it looks like they made quick work of the cleanup. reporting live in oakland. >>> the cost of free speech a very heavy one for cash-strapped

authorities showed us one of 11 home made devices found in a backpack during those protests in downtown oakland yesterday. the sheriff's office says they burn hot enough to actually set a car on fire, tossed inside. as we first showed you last night, a police officer ordered the news photographer to move back, after spotting a backpack containing the devices at 17th street, near telegraph avenue. and for more on the occupied protesters, you can go to our website at ktvu.com and click on the may day tab. >>> and interstate 80 to open any minute after a multi car crash in oakland. the chp says the accident happened a little over an hour ago, blocking all southbound lanes of 880, just past the 23rd avenue exit. the crash apparently started with a motorcyclist down. at least three other vehicles were downed, we were told there were only minor injuries, the traffic is still extremely heavy through the area. >>> the highway patrol says a woman was killed in sonoma county today, the driver was in her 70s, heading west, about 10:00 this morning. she apparently lost control, then over-corrected and ran

in oakland we had a march from the b.a.r.t. station to downtown.ere we saw immigrant rights groups and occupy groups basically promoting the idea of equality and rights for immigrants. and there were a lot of other things that happened in the spectrum of activities that took place on may day. unions, for instance, some got together with occupy to picket the building because ferry worker are trying to get a contract. or nurses, retail workers and janitors at westfield mall. but there were also some incidents in which windows got smashed and property got trashed both on valencia street the night before and then in downtown oakland in the afternoon and evening of may day. >> what about this discussion within occupy about tactics? about whether that kind of action makes send? >> well, i think i have a couple of quotes here actually of -- of people who are on both sides of this. so it kind of gives you the flavor of what the debate is about. so somebody who is in favor of what was taking place, which are these actions that are being conducted by the bla
