in cuts to the district which could include layoff, sflss possible at their headquarters in downtown oakland. the superintendent met with us members of the media to talk about a new initiative called community of schools. it's a path forward for oakland unified to get through its current budget problems. if you're not familiar they face a $30 million deficit, $16 million the year after that. she acknowledges the district has made mistakes in the past that led to these financial problems but also points out enrollment is flat. enrollment down by 12,400 students. that's one reason they agreed to shut down roots academy middle school at the end of the year. you saw the students protesting that decision last friday. there's a show for support for teachers without a contract. last monday the teachers union voted to authorize a strike. they ha they are demanding a 12% increase over three years. in a surprise the superintendent says talks between both sides have resumed. >> we met thursday, friday. you said you're meeting today. is that correct? >> hopefully. >> so the fact is you're still talking.

( darya ) another big story we are following this morning... actor jussie smollet was back on the set of "empire" the same day that police charged him with orchastrating a violent attack on himself. these are sketches from smollet's court appearance yesterday. he is maintaining his innocence. yesterday... smollet held a meeting with the cast of "empire" and asked for their support while insisting he is innocent. this happened after police in chicago laid out their case saying that smollet paid two brothers 35-hundred dollars to attack him. smollett is due back in court in three weeks.
