trujillo is live in san jose where yesterday volunteers put some of the finishing touches on the restoration being done. >> reporter: good morning. this looks like now here in downtown san jose, this is all thanks to volunteers and donors who saw what the vandals did to the san jose war memorial. now you are getting a look at the finishing touches exclusively on nbc bay area. for months the old memorial as you mentioned remained boarded up. vandals shattered three of the gas panels. and because they are so expensive it took a while for donors and volunteers to pick up the pieces because each panel is worth roughly $18,000. so they raised some money and ordered cheaper yet more durable glass panels. these are worth roughly $2,000 each. the contractor put the finishing touches on the memorial yesterday. volunteers are preparing for the unveiling in the next few days, a rededication if you will. one vet ran told me it he saw a lot of things in the jungles of vietnam. we were supposed to hear live this morning from andrew, a volunteer responsible for this restoration effort but he called a few minutes ago saying he won't be able to make it. thanks to his work and the wo
