here's a live look outside at downtown san jose. you can see the brown sky there. meteorologist anthony slaughter joins us. when will we see winter-like weather out there? >> it's not on the horizon any time soon. things continue to remain dry all the way through 2013. but i want to bring your attention to why it's been so hazy over the past month or so. an area of high pressure over the bay area. that creates a lid. when you get spare the air warnings, you have to have high pressure aloft and you also have to have calm winds at the valley floor. that's what we're looking at. and a lot of that calming of the wind allows for the pollution to get trapped. because of that we're talking about another spare the air alert for tomorrow. categories in the unhealthy levels. here's the other thing you have to have for a red flag warning, strong winds. they kind of counterbalance themselves. we had a cold front come through yesterday that stirred up the atmosphere. now we have that cold air trying to get up under the warm air and gusty hills above 1,000 feet. through tomorrow

. >>> a "shelter in place" has been lifted in san jose after a gas leak closed a downtown street for hours. that leak capped about 1:30 this afternoon. construction crews accidentally cut into a gas line buried under the alameda just after 11:00 this morning. traffic was halted in a six- block area around that leak as pg&e crews dug up the street to cap it. >>> well, it's happened again. another smoky fire at a metal recycling plant in redwood city. it's the second fire in as many months at sims metal management on seaport boulevard. thick white smoke carried the stench of burning plastic as far south as mountain view. it started with a small explosion in a pile of light iron recyclables after midnight. the cause may be difficult to figure out. >> this little pile has been shredded so we probably won't be able to figure out the exact cause but we do have the tapes and we are working with the agencies and will be doing a thorough investigation. >> you'll remember another fire on november 10 at the same facility sent thick dark smoke billowing to the south bay. that fire ignited a heap

so there's some perspective for you on the cold for you this morning. 36 right now in downtown san jose. and by downtown standards, that's chilly. south of san jose, morgan hill, 32 degrees, also around the peninsula. out there at the airport, san mateo 37 degrees, 34 in redwood city. and as you just saw, 27 degrees in walnut creek where she's trying to keep warm this morning. and 38 degrees in livermore. enough of a breeze to keep the temperatures up a little bit. back into the 20s around petaluma and santa rosa this morning. 30 currently in navado. yesterday afternoon as the cold front swept in, brought us the dry air, is going to continue as we go through tonight, freezing temperatures for the entire bay area. then the interesting point will be friday morning is our next chance of showers. we could see snow levels, maybe briefly down into some of higher valleys here. the north bay and lake port. looking at a good chance of snow showers down to about 1,000 to 2,000 feet on friday morning. it's not going to warm up much. fremont, near 50 degrees, 53, one of those days. >> maybe find ni
