jessica doyle is back. she has a special your money report. of course the economy the big focus of the state of the union last night as it was last year and it's been recently since 2008 practically. were any of those promises kept? >> of course now we know the president's priorities for 2013. last year we heard a lot of economic promises, too. some were kept. some were not. we're taking a look back. >> reporter: the state of the economy hasn't changed dramatically since the last state of the union address. we've seen a slight decline in the nation's unemployment rate dropping from 8.3% in january 2012 to 7.9% last month. but some groups enjoyed new help. on education for all college students a promise to keep costs down while putting administrators on notice. >> if you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will ge down. >> reporter: the president -- will go down. >> reporter: the president extended a $2500 a year tax credit for eligible students and public pressure caused some private universities to freeze tuit

let's talk a little money, it's time now jessica doyle is here. >> hi there. want us to evaluate money this weekend. >> yeah. you know we've given you a lot of tasks this week and talked about taxes for example but we also need to remember we've got the automatic federal budget cuts looping so we want to take you a look at your bank account. focus on your money. it's very important. you need to know how much you have coming in. how much you have going out and this is the time to move into a mode that personal finance guru suze orman calls live below your means but within your needs. and here's why. residents that are prepared for layoffs and furloughs because of the automatic cuts planned to trigger on march 1st. if congress does not stop it, and it very well could but if it does not, sequestration will slash $85 billion from federal budgets through september 30th. federal agencies have to cut up to 10% of their budget. and as an example the defense department plans to furlough employees starting in april. employees would have to stay home without pay one day

jessica doyle is watching your money. >> she's here to tell us about a tough day on wall street yesterday. >> absolutely. for some time now we've really enjoyed low interest rates, it helps us with our car loans, mortgage rates. the problem is we're not so sure how long that's going to last. minutes from the last month's fed meeting show some policymakers were concerned that keeping interest rates near historic lows, that could fuel innation and turn around and hurt the market. the fed plans to evaluate its current interest rate policy at its next meeting march 19 and 20. that spooked the partial. stocks slipped from the recent five-year highs on concerns the fed could roll back its promise to keep interest rates low. checking the numbers for you. the dow stands back below 14,000 after dropping 108 points in trade yesterday. nasdaq lost 49 points, big loser on the day. it was down about one and a half percent. the s&p 500 was off by 19 points. >>> that ticking time bomb, that sequestration is right around the corner. if lawmakers don't act in the next eight days, the automatic budget cuts
