. >>> cnn's global affairs analyst kimberly dozer is joining us now. thank you very much for joining us. what's your assessment right now, bottom line assessment of what's going on? >> reporter: >> right now, the israeli defense forces and every branch of israeli intelligence is watching not just to try to mop up the fighters who got through the gaza border, and are staging ongoing attacks but they're looking at all of their opponents, possible militant attacks from the west bank, also hamas, sorry, hezbollah, in lebanon, which has more than 100,000 rockets and missiles that could reach most of israel. and even militants as far away as syria. the suspicion is that iran has at least facilitated this attack by hamas and gaza. and therefore, since iran cooperates with hezbollah and militants in syria, the worry of israeli officials is that this attack could ex pand. as you just heard from the idf spokesperson, they haven't detected anything like that yet, but they are watching. they also have to re-evaluate every bit of intelligence over the past several

kimberly dozer is back with me. what is your take on his comments an why was it important to meet where the egyptian leaders at this key moment? >> i think that blinken is trying to keep communication open and keep this from becoming a multi--front war by listening to their concerns and trying to facilitate, remember there was some hope during this past week of facilitating a release of the women and children among the hostages being held by hamas. but this was also a message from blinken to israel. he said that israel has a right to defend itself, but added the way israel does this matters. that is a cautionary note to israel over and over that it needs to be careful of civilian casualties and i think that is one of the reasons we've seen a delay to a pre-planned possible ground invasion over this weekend. though, the weather also was apparently not favorable for it. >> thanks for that, kimberly. back here with me in the panel. this comes as the u.s. will deal with this, how democratic leaders and republican leader

the fact that hamas and other groups -- kim dozer, global affairs analyst, the fact that hamas is still after almost three weeks now of incredibly hew bombardment by israel is still able to fire rockets that were a number of sirens here in tel aviv throughout the day, more so than we've heard in many days, and respond even now at this late hour, what does that tell you? >> well, israeli and u.s. officials have told us they thought that hamas had spent at least a year planning this, at least a year stockpiling the kind of weapons they would need for a sustained response to whatever they trugerred israel into doing, and you see what israel is doing in response is not at least initially the blitz charge into gaza that we all expected but rather what seems like an approach, taking a bit of territory at a time and choosing a few targets at a time and then what we find out from the israeli defense forces the next day is they list a number of different targets. no one overnight operation is aimed at one thing. so right now, they could be going after some hostage targets, but there has been, as

joining me now is cnn global aff affairs analyst kimberly dozer. what do you make of what you have seen over this past 34 hours or so, these dawn raids, these incursions, unprecedented activity by hamas militants out of gaza into israel taking hostages, killing people, 44 soldiers dead and possibly more. what do you make of what you have seen? >> it is like watching a hostage taking of a plane on a massive scale. for the arab world watching this, it is puncturing the view of israel as invincible. which is why i think there is going to be some sort of massive blowback in making. we are probably going to see a ground incursion, especially as hamas spokespeople inside gaza are saying that they have hidden those israeli hostages in tunnels. the only way to get them out is to go in on the ground. and the arab world will be watching. when i have looked at media channels from the gulf, they are not leading with the pictures of what's hang to israeli citizens. they are leading with the pictures of what is happening inside gaza. buildings being crashed down

there were tanks involved, bull dozers involved. reporters were not on the scene but video was provided. and the number of hostages is up to 224 as they identify more bodies and get more intelligence from what is goal on inside gaza. but i think that you put your finger on it respect they are trying to say that it is targeted to show restraint internationally, but for the domestic audience, they are showing that they are going in in a big visible way, an extremely significant way. and the images show that while they say we focus on the ground assault, reality is that gaza has been saysity m idecimated. specifically northern gaza. and the images show what happens after the devastating already 20 day war. >> and i know you've been talking think to the doctors on the grounds and necessity of fuel. and the u.n. says they are almost out of those fuel resources. israel won't allow them in, any think that hamas will take the fuel. what are you hearing about the growing calls for humanitarian pause? >> yeah, there is a huge call for that. o
