dr. ford and her family to relocate from their home. abc's jonathan karlets us started. >> reporter: christine blasey ford is calling for an fbi investigation into her claims against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. she wants that before she agrees to testify before congress. in a letter to senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley obtained by abc news, ford's lawyers write, quote, a full investigation by law enforcement officials will ensure the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a nonpartisan midwestern and that the committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing. ford's lawyers say her life has been turned upside down and she will not appear on capitol hill on monday. this as president trump expresses concerns about the personal toll on kavanaugh and his family. >> i feel so badly for him that he's going through this, to be honest with you. i feel so badly for him. >> reporter: the president did not say dr. ford's name, nor did he express any concerns about her or her serious allegations. >> hopefully the

dr. ford has to say tomorrow. and that he could make up his mind after hearing that. i want to bring in jon karl, our chief white house correspondent. jon, it's hard to summarize that in just a few words. but i'm not sure that he helped brett kavanaugh's case today. >> ah, no, george. first of all, an extraordinary performance by the president. but he was all over the map. at some points, calling this a con job, all of the allegations against brett kavanaugh. at other times, sounding like he might well cut him loose, if he doesn't like what he hears at the hearing. he even said, george, that he may cancel his much-anticipated meeting with the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein tomorrow because he wants the focus, all the focus including his own focus, to be on that hearing tomorrow with kavanaugh and his accuser, christine blasey ford. >> and the president admitting his own experience with women making accusations against him for sexual misconduct also having a great impact on his -- on his views on this matter. we're going to sign off right now, of course, we're going to be covering that he

karl tonight, thank you. >>> as you heard jon report there, senator lindsey graham, for one, saying the senate should vote even without hearing from dr. blasey ford on monday. many senators who will have to decide on kavanaugh are up for re-election. abc's mary bruce back on the hill tonight, are those senators listening to their constituents on both sides back home? >> reporter: from the moment republicans like senator susan collins arrived back in washington, they have been under increasing pressure. >> do you believe the accuser? >> i don't know enough to make a judgement at this point. >> reporter: but now, those same republicans are turning up the pressure on christine blasey ford. >> there's a week, more than a week, between when she made the allegations and the date of the hearing, which was slated for next monday. i just don't understand why the hearing shouldn't go forth. >> reporter: collins noting ford has been told she could testify in private. >> i don't think that she can reject all those options, because otherwise, there are these very serious allegations hanging over the head of a nominee who has emphatically denied t

karl, where do you think this is going? >> well, i think it is going to depend heavily upon the presentation of the two individuals on thursday. dr. ford first and brett kavanaugh. i'm a little biased here because bret is a personal friend and i have great admiration for his intellect and character. i think at the end of the day look the senate judiciary committee is likely to bring him out and country will be unnecessarily divided over. this a country never become accepting of his nomination. but my sense is that at the end of the day he is sitting on the supreme court where over the years ahead he will do an exemplary job: some look for democrats up for reflection in big trump winning states that they have a little more cover now to vote no. if that were the case, i don't know if you agree with that if that were the case he would have to rely, the judge every republican maybe could afford to do without one. arch that it's over. what do you think? >> yeah. look, i'm not certain i agree with the assumption that every democrat now has the ability to say in a state like west virginia where president trump won by 42%, 42 points that

dr. ford's testimony from the vice president's office on capitol hill as we see the chairman, senator charles grassley, enter the hearing room. we see several democrats as well. quickly, jon karl, the president calling brett kavanaugh a good man now, he is his nominee, but he was not always a popular choice with the president. >> reporter: by many counts he was somebody that was pushed on him by republican leaders by his own team vetting a supreme court candidate, and i'm told, george, that the president was not particularly happy with brett kavanaugh's performance in that fox news interview, felt that he he needed to be more defiant and firm in his denials. this is a critical moment here. the president has made it clear he stands with brett kavanaugh. he hasn't given an inch on that. as cecilia mentioned, he did not rule out the possibility of changing his mind depending on what happens here. this comes down to this hearing, the performance in this hearing. we know he will be watching. >> the senators are taking their seats. senator grassley in place right now. i want to bring in our legal team as well, dan abrams and sunny hostin. let's keep an eye on chairman right there. w
