dr. amaroso and mr. olsen. you say in your testimony you routinely track threats to your n networks. how can we protect consumers privacy and sensitive data from companies? >> i think the big debate has been between government and thb. if i go to a conference and a hacker is saying there is a signature i should look at. i scribble it down and look at it. if a government individual does that, i cannot put it in the network. we would be operating as a branch or agent of the government. that seems to me a little silly. that is something that probably ought to be addressed. >> that is the specific issue we are trying to drill down to here. >> yeah. >> can you give us something more specific. >> the united states intelligence agencies and law enforcement see different signatures we don't look for. we are not in law we're not in law enforcement, we're providing service to customers. we don't chase that sort of thing down. we chase it to the point where we can stop it and that's it. but like intelligence groups will really dig down deep and see something we don't. for them to share that, pa

dr. edward amaroso with us. he with at&t services. doctor, we are glad you are here. >> great. thanks.'m ed amaroso. i have spent my entire adult life in cyber security. in fact, as a teenager, my dad was a computer scientist. i have been in and around this forever. i started work at bell laboratories. i found i was a pretty good hacker. i had been doing that ever since. now i'm the chief security officer. i kind of come at this with, you know, a very practical perspective on threat. there are three things i want to share with you that i think are observations that might help you as you develop legislation. they are based on imperial day-to-day dealings with security issues with our mobility network and wire line network and entire fortune 1,000 in lots of different countries. i do that all day long. i wanted to share. the first one is about innovation. we are being out innovated by our adversaries. i don't know if you ever bought a piece of furniture and taken it home and admired the handy work. that is what we do with the malware. it is so good and so well crafted that we marvel at h

dr. amaroso, there is no easy answer to this problem. i want to thank all of the panelists today. it has been very enlightening. >> thank you. >> i want to build a little bit on what my friend mentioned. i want a different perspective. this is kind of tied to federal workers. where are you finding your cyber warriors from? in other words, where are they coming out of? are they coming from private universities? the military? the cutting edge new people for helping you do this stuff, where are they coming from? >> it is a variety of places. there is a need for more educational focus, not to december secured, but ict generally. some are former military service members, former law enforcement. others are administrators who are interested in security. others are former childhood hector's or something like this. and they're interested in it. so it is eveready mystery -- childhood actorhackers or sometg like this. and they're interested in it. >> i have been teaching at stephens for 22 years. if you look at my class in 1990, you'd see something that would look like a typical college clas
