dr. andrew weil. he's here to talk about his latest book, number 13, called "spontaneous happiness."epidemic, depression. thanks so much for being with us. and why is it that it's such a fast-growing epidemic? people may say there's so many advertisements for anti-depressants. that's why we're so depressed. >> some of it is manufactured by the medical pharmaceutical industry. but is very successful of convincing people they have an imbalance of brain chemistry that require treatment with drugs. i don't know what that percentage is. we take that out and we're still left with a lot of unexplained depression. i hear many people today blame it on the world and the economy. but my parents lived through the great depression, which makes this look pretty tame, and that by all indications, mental and emotional health was better than it is now. >> so why? >> well, i think it's a mismatch between the life our genes prepared us for and the life that most of us are now living. i think over the past 100 years one of the thing that's happened is increasing social isolation. and there's a lot of re
